I have already taken my American flag, reversed it so the stars are on the bottom, as a symbol of distress.  It will hang in such manner until our country gets back to civility.

LAS CRUCES ?If you happened to drive by Las Crucen Lou Schrader's house Wednesday, you probably saw his American flag flying upside-down on a pole in the front yard.

It wasn't by accident.

Schrader, 59, flew the flag upside-down for a day in protest of the election of Barack Obama as president. He's calling the move a political statement against Obama's platform.

Schrader, who lives on Ethel Avenue, said he also flew his flag upside-down both times Bill Clinton was elected.

"We have descended into a one-political-party nation," he said. "The Democrats have taken over everything. We're going to be taxed out of existence."

Schrader assures his action was not racially motivated.

"It's not that I'm a racist; I just don't like this guy as an individual," he said. "Some of the things Barack Obama said during his campaign has scared me to death, (such as) "let's spread the wealth.' Excuse me, that's socialism."

Schrader, a former member of the Navy, said he's concerned Obama "hates the military."

The flag wasn't flying Thursday. Schrader said he only flies it on federal holidays and in protest of certain presidents winning office.

Schrader lives across the street from three Obama supporters, who happen to be black.

Neighbor Dimitris Kollaros, 32, seemed to be

taking Schrader's action with a grain of salt.

"We were laughing about it all day long," said Kollaros, interviewed Wednesday evening. "Now that there's an African-American president, he's protesting the U.S., and I think it's funny because, if you love your country, you love it no matter what."

Kollaros said he backs freedom of speech, but flying the flag upside-down shouldn't be done lightly because it could send the wrong message.

"We've got to be careful about how we do that, because we don't want to offend people," he said.

Robert Pritchet, 30, who described himself as "open-minded," said he's personally not offended by the upside-down flag, but it opens up the door for other people, especially veterans, to be.

"I think he could have done something different," he said. "That could have been offensive; that's the symbol of the United States."

Pritchet and Kollaros said they get along with Schrader and have known him since they moved into the neighborhood two years ago. They said they're aware he's a military veteran and think his service in the military should have given him more respect for the office of president, not less.

"George Bush didn't do much for this country, but you have to respect the guy because of the office he holds," Kollaros said. "Obama hasn't taken office yet. Give him a chance. If Obama doesn't hold true to his word, then we're going to protest."

According to U.S. Code, which contains laws about handling the American flag, the flag shouldn't be displayed upside-down "except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property."

Las Cruces police showed up at Schrader's home Wednesday to check whether the flag was a distress signal.

According to www.ushistory.org, there aren't penalties for violating the flag code, and the U.S. Supreme Court "has ruled that politically motivated violations of the flag code are protected by the First Amendment

While I am prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt there is so much in his background and that of Michelle that I question.  Hopefully once in the Oval Office he will move a bit to the right and be a President for everyone.  But he owes big time to the far left of the dem party so I wonder.  And the economic mess is a tough nut to crack.  Where will he get the $$ for the programs he promised.  With over 6 percent unemployment, and some of that in the 250000 range, a tax increase will just make the mess worse.  Sadly he is between a rock and a hard place.  We will see how good he really is and whether hope and change was just smoke and mirrows.

It takes a strong man to pick up after the mess the repubs have left this country in.  I believe and so do millions of American voters, that our president elect is the right man for the job.  Give him a chance to prove it.

I think flying the flag upside down is a disgrace when it is done for such a purpose.  Those who do that should be ashamed of themselves.

I am thinking positive.  I am positively distressed.  To think that the American public would choose such a shallow and conniving person such as this reminds me of a student who has two weeks of pilot traing taking over the controls of a 767 plane and fly it to Europe.  Thanks, but I'll wait until the next flight.

He is shallow simply by denying and/or hiding his past history to the voting public.  He is conniving simply because in two years, he has spent 1/2 billion dollars towards this election.  Where did all that money come from?  He has conviently been able to hide most of his contributors.

I will not support this clown.  I will remove my flag from the public during national holidays, to be replaced upside down after said holiday.  I wish him no ill will, but then I wish him no good will either.  He IS NOT my president.  I just need to have the patience to watch him hang himself while he hangs his supporters along with him.  So, for the next 4 years, politically, I will be in limbo.  My venom is not only for him, but for every legistlator at the federal level.  We are infested with greed and corruption and , up until now, the general public seems to be satified with said conduct.  I just know I am prepping my home and my family for a very hard time while our freedom is gradually being eroded.

Everyone deserves a chance, even Obama.  But I don't worry about him as much as I do the dems in Congress.  Why should the taxpayer support retirement and health benefits for the UAW?  This is probably the first payoff to labor for supporting the Dem ticket.  Obama has a problem.  If he truly wants to be a President for all the people (he says this over and over) then he will have to stand up to the far left in his own party.  He is strong enough?  Only time will tell.  If not he will be a one term President and we will see the first woman in the Oval Office.  I won't mention any name because Deedee would freak out.

Harold-do you know how many of us wanted to do the
very same thing you have done when Bush received the
office of our president on a silver platter from the Supreme Court? But, we knew that if were REAL
AMERICANS we would give him a chance. Our anger and fears were brought to fruition, and we endured 8
long, heart-breaking years of this fool and his ilk, and
we find ourselves in the worst mess our country has EVER been in, thanks to him and them. You sir
are NOT A REAL AMERICAN. Why don't you just
pack up and move somewhere else? You are a
disgrace to our country. God Bless Obama and Biden
and all the fine folks who will bring our America back.

Well now Lightswitch, it seems you have produced a oxy-moran when you attack President Bush the way you have.  It seems strange to me that although his popularity numbers harbors around 20, the Congress has numbers of approval under the number ten.  And last I heard, both houses of Congress are controlled by Dimocrats.  So please explain the discrepencies between the numbers, and why President Bush catches more hell, yet is higher on the 'like' scale.

To refresh your memory, it was several years back when America rose against "Taxation without Representation."  I believe it was some 'type of party'.Were those citizens Un-American because of their protest?  Although you seem to relish the stated fact 'Why don't you just pack up and move somewhere else.'  I sir (or madam) am a legally born citizen of this nation and have every right to voice my opinion regarding 'THE CLOWN.'  You see, the Constitution guarentees these privileges for each of us.  Besides, true conservatives don't hollar or threaten to move else where just because of our impending disgraceful in-coming president.  We leave such banter to the yellow-livered liberals to spew that crap.  You see, I am not a Holloywood type moron.

You need not worry.  I have no intention of even giving 'THE CLOWN' the time of day, much less denigrate him.  I will simply sit back and watch as he introduces Karl Marx and the likes of him to dig this hole deeper.  Then, perhaps, Americans will be forced to come to their senses and see the socialist he truly is.  His re-distribution of the wealth is nothing more than a penalty to the people who produce and a teat to suckle on for those who refuse to produce.  The teat will become dry at some point.

So you see, you may think I am Un-American but I KNOW I am a red-blooded American and when I see crap about to try and change America, gennerally speaking, I flush the toilet.
