XP AntiVirus 2008, is a rogue program that displays false positives on your machine
in an attempt to get you to buy their product
These programs are fraudware because they make changes to your computer and then state these changes
are infections as a scare tactic to have you purchase the software.
It goes without saying that under no circumstances should you buy it.

It is certainly doing the rounds at the moment, it is spread by mailicious websites, I have
come accross it myself a few times in the last two weeks embedded in various websites on my travels round the net.
There are also other variants of the same Trojan called XPAntivirus2009 and XPAntivirus,
If you are surfing websites and you get a splash screen for XP Antivirus2008 don't panic, and don't click on anything
just Right Click on Your TaskBar , Left Click on Task Manager and in the Applications Box that opens look for it listed
there. click on it so that it turns Blue then at the bottom of the Box Click End Task.
That will close the Webpage down.

If you want to protect yourself or your children/grandchildren while surfing a good idea is to install a Site Advisor, this will
alert you to any dangerous sites before you can click on them. McAfee have a free one
http://www.siteadvisor.com/download/ie.html.

Do you know this sounds very much like what happened to my pc recently when things kept popping up saying something about a critical failure and go to this site.  When I got there it was selling anti virus or something then another would pop up selling.   I'm trying out AVG free at the moment and Windows Defender.  Took PC Guard off as it wasnt giving the same protection as Netguard had.  You have to update your broadband to get the antivirus and I think there is now a charge for it.
My pc went funny when Net guard sort of disappeared for no reason kept saying it wasnt running as they couldnt find my settings???  It had been on my pc for donkey's years.  Disappeared and now pc guard is in it's place.

My son said this is what you do.

mum .
if you get anything like this ,dont worry just close the box in the normal way ..you dont need to go to task manager to close it .

anti virus companys have been doing this for a few yrs now ,trouble is its legal to .other software companys use the same trick ,and so many ppl fall for it too,and ending up spending a lot of money when they dont really need to.

avg anti virus has a built in site advisor to help guide you ..
