Yep its that time again, lines of cars held up by people towing caravans on the road. Do they do it because they can,t afford a proper holiday? so want to annoy everyone else that can?.

Do you think they should only be allowed to travel at night so as to keep normal traffic flowing.

As an ex caravanner I must give my views!

Firstly... Can they not aford a proper holiday? Maybe yes maybe no,, but has anyone looked closely at some of these outfits? Well ... some of them are more luxurious than lots of peoples homes (including mine lol) and some cost almost as much probably. Then there are the more common sort (which I belonged to for many years)
We started off tenting because WE COULDN'T afford a holiday.
Then we progressed to a small caravan and installed all mod cons, slowly over the years moved up to a bigger one  which had a seperate bedroom too! and all this on 2 wheels! wow we had some fantastic times and if we didn't like the area we moved on which is all part of the idea of having your own holiday home on wheels.
Also I have to say one of the biggest plus's was that as our daughter was on a special diet and in a wheelchair(all in the days when everywhere including hotels were not disabled friendly) and it was far easier organising meals and medication, maybe this applies to others too.
Maybe part of me is a rover lol.

As for holding traffic up ....... well round here I would rather follow a caravan than a tractor which are demons on our roads and they wont pull off! Even though the roads round here have special pullover places especially  to aleviate this problem.
Or some dear old sunday driver who thinks that the national speed limit is 35 and when the go through a limited zone they drop down to 20!

At least when we were towing we had great fun counting how many cars we had collected lol and if the Q was out of site we would do the decent thing ( eventually) and find a lay by to pull in and set the poo devils behind to speed to thier hearts
content.

I have to admit I also get stuck sometimes ,, but then I think back and I have a little more patience, well! mostly LOL

If you are not or never have been a caravanner you will not understand the freedom of choice this brings in more ways than one.

Well said Tin..
We have just given up caravanning after nearly 20 years..and yes it is annoying when all you can see is a caravan going slow..I can remember one occasion going up a hill towing our van and a cyclist was in front struggling , we could'nt overtake due to traffic coming the other way , so we had to crawl behind him. As we got to the brow of the hill he suddenly decided to take to the pavements..so you can imagine once the cars behind started to overtake all they could see was a clear road ahead...and one again the caravanner took the blame.....

I MUST ADMIT THAT MY HUBBY AND I HAVE HAD SOME LOVELY HOLIDAYS IN OUR CARAVAN. WE DONT HAVE IT NOW AS IT GOT TO MUCH TROUBLE WITH HITCHING IT ON THE CAR. I THINK YOU HAVE TO HAVE A BIT OF PATIENCE WITH THE CARAVANERS ON THE ROAD, AS ITS ONLY FOR A SHORT WHILE AND LETS FACE IT , SOME OF THEM MAYBE DON'T LIKE GOING ABROAD AND TO BE QUITE HONEST THERE ARE SOME LOVELY PLACES IN ENGLAND , SCOTLAND AND IRELAND WHICH ARE MUCH NICER TO LOOK AT THEN GOING ABROAD, AND IF YOU HAVE THE RIGHT WEATHER WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT. ALL THE LOVELY GREEN SCENERY AS WELL AND ALL THE LITTLE PICNIC AREAS YOU CAN FIND. ROSE
