YOU CAN'T REALLY SAY WHEN ITS TIME TO BE GIVING UP DRIVING AS EVERY  INDIVIDUAL IS DIFFERENT. BUT YOU KNOW YOURSELF WHEN ITS TIME , ESPECIALLY WHEN A CERTAIN ELDERLY MAN WAS GOING DOWN THE WRONG WAY ON A MOTORWAY, HE WAS 89 AND I THINK THAT IS TO OLD TO BE DRIVING , IT ISNT SAFE FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE ON THE ROAD WHEN SOMEONE OF THAT AGE IS DRIVING A CAR.PEOPLE MAY NOT LIKE TO THINK ITS TIME TO GIVE UP , BUT IT IS A DANGER ON THE ROADS, ESPECIALLY FOR PEDESTRIANS AS WELL AS OTHER CAR DRIVERS.MY DAD GAVE UP WHEN HE WAS 75 AS HE ONLY HAD ONE EYE AND HE FOUND THAT HE WAS LOSING HIS CONFIDENCE AT THAT AGE. ROSE.

this is from another room
i recently nursed a lady of 101 years old she caused an accident by just pulling out and not looking , there were witnesses and it was her fault, the driver in the other car a middle aged man was badly injured , to this day she denies it was her fault, and is insisting she will drive again, the roads have changed so much over the years it must be difficult for the older driver.i live in a small village and have one bus an hour and none on a sunday, but i wouldnt want to drive, had lessons and hated it.

Its an impossible question to answer.
We all know how different we are - my Mum in Law is 91, and although she doesn't drive, she's alert and reasonably agile.
On the other hand, my own mother (who lived to be 100) was senile at 80 but continued to drive until we told her a HUGE lie when she was 90 and said her car had failed its MOT and couldn't be repaired.
I always felt it was a terrible thing to do to her (and I hope no-one ever has to do it to me) but it was the only way we could think of to keep her off the roads.  She insisted she was perfectly safe as she'd been driving since she was 17 (no test in those days) but she had malecular degeneration of the eye and couldn't see the telly from 4ft away, her colour sight was almost non-existant poor soul, and she was profoundly deaf (not a lot going for her was there?) - and we deprived her of driving!!!
We did run her about ourselves, but its not the same is it.
I often wonder if we did the right thing....................................DBarb

You did the right thing Dancing Barb.  Just think how you would have felt if she had had an accident and caused something like little Sophie in Sydney.
