Acts 2:31

He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. (KJV translation)

Lately I seem to be hearing this verse a lot and I'm not sure why people want to dwell there except perhaps to say we have immediate hell or heaven after death, I do not know.

It bothers me but I would like more explanation of the meaning from others.

What do the most of you think this verse means and are there other verses on Jesus  "going to hell".

Hey, you can send your bible questions at [email protected]
but acts 2:31 acctually means the following:
First if you know allready the bible speaks about different resurections.
Firstfruits of ressurection was when Jesus raise after his death a group of people to go to heaven with him after the fourty days
Second ressurection is when he will raise all the persons from the beginning till the end of time.
Third ressurection which is also acctually called second ressurection it is because im counting the firstfruits as also one. But this last ressurection is the ressurection of eternal death.
The bible speaks about 2 deaths.
Jesus died our second death. the first death is the death which the bible says it is called sleep. The second death is the eternal death which is at the end after the thousand years of satan inprisonment where all will stand naked withouth the glory of God to receive their jugdment. That moment its called HELL.
Hell is not a place which now exist but is a moment after the thousand years which simply means a everlasting death which you cannot come out of sleep off like the first one.
Jesus died the second death, so that we will not receive the punishment of everlasting death. so in a way he went to hell, which you must understand as he tasted the second death he died that dead to avoid us from receiving that.
I hope you understand it a bit.
But try not to be confused because some people believe Jesus went to hell etc, and believing other things which the bible is not presuming.
God bless you and you can tell others that they can email all their bible questions at the above given emailadres.

Becky,

It is unfortunate that the Greek word in this passage is translated "hell", but here is a simple explanation that may alleviate your confusion. The Greek word translated as "hell" here is Sheol, which means grave. So the passage should actually read that Jesus' soul would not be left in the grave, and it is rendered as such in some Bible versions. Hope this answers your confusion.

Hope, please check your reference. the "greek"term is "Hades"  not "sheol" which is Hebrew. Though almost synomous "hades" is more specific as for the "relam of the dead, or 'lower' regions" .

but in regard to peter's sermon he was making a point that Christ being sin-less, would make it impossible to 'remain dead', not to mention all the other porphecies concerning HIs rule and reign, 2ed comming, etc, and that would not be 'possible' if Christ was "dead, not to return".

Kevin, I would have to disagree with your premise that   "Hell is not a place which now exist but is a moment after the thousand years"  There is much scripture which teaches a literal place where there is and will be "weeping and gnashing of teeth", and there are various references  in Scripture which refer to this place.
You must remember  the story cited by Jesus about the rich man and the poor man named Lazarus: the two ended up in quite different places after their physical bodies died, didn't they.
Now, I do realize that many really want to spiritualize away the essence of what Jesus was teaching here, (the author of the 'clear word bible'  referred to Jesus teaching as "an old myth circulating around Jerusalem") but for those of us who believe that God said what He meant, and meant what He said in His Word, the importance of this teaching of Jesus can't be ignored.

I agree with Mae, that there is definately a literal place here and now that IS hell.  There are, like Mae said, many Scriptural references to that place and how it exists now.  Now as far as what happens when we die, I personally, through my own studies, do not believe that any one (even Lazarus) does not go directly to hell or Heaven, for that matter, when we die.  Where we end up will be determined when Jesus returns and after the judgement takes place.

Hi Tiger, thanks for your comments.
It seems that some people form their ideas about spiritual things by using their  personal preferences and opinions as the criteria by which they  accept or reject concepts, regardless of how often those concepts are taught by the clear text of Scripture.
There are those who are so fear-motivated in their christian experience, that they cannot handle any thought of hell, because they are personally  so uncertain of their position in Christ Jesus.  They can't  even grasp the basics of the Gospel of Good News that Jesus preached: and as a consequence, they deny the reality of Hell as being a real place.  In doing this, they also deny the teaching of  Scripture.

The wonderful parabole (para bole - "To throw along side") of Lazarus and the rich man does us the common misconception that we go to our final destination when when our spirit leaves our body, however, Lazarus (Mary and Martha's brother from Bethany?) DID die and was resurrected four days later. There is no record in my Bible of what he found that place of "sleep" to be like.

The purpose of that parable was to make us aware that all of us have a common life. We share not only the web of humanity between us all, but even the well being of other creatures (plants) matter to God too!

Jesus used the false concept of immediate rewards when we breath our last to teach the truth that we are members one of another and when one of us suffers all the rest suffer.

When we can rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep we are seek to be all things to all persons that we will by all means save some.

Th struggle that we have with failing to contribute what we can to our brothers and sisters is that we don't call on one another for help and making sure our friends when we have time of need.

Abraham made league with some of the local tribes and used that bond when Lot and his family were being removed from their home.

My agony has always been how to treat those not of my peculiar denomination of Christianity. Especially those who have taken the name of Christ!

The concept that we can be out of this world is a fallacy.  If we were to only allow SDA sites here on this connection, where would the union of believers that includes all that name His dear name?

MY PEOPLE ARE DESTROYED FOR LACK OF KNOWLEDGE, BECAUSE eTHEY HAVE REJECTED KNOWLEDGE...HOSEA 4:6 The sister asked a simple question honestly, cause she wanted to know, and some of you come up with all sorts of eronious, unfounded conclusions that are not scriptural. As one of my brother said, hell in the greek is Hades, which is translated "the grave". The new testament was written in greek. There is no place in the scriptures that teache that Jesus will burn a few moments after the millenium. Hell is for the devil and his angels.
Unfortunately, unrepentant sinners will end up there too. Let the bible be it's own interpreter my sister. Where do people go when they die? To the grave. That's where our saviour went, He died the final death for us, BUT HIS SOUL DID NOT REMAIN IN THE GRAVE (HELL). He is alive, and we have hope of eternal life. the bible says in Rev. 21:13, that death and hell delivered up the dead that were in them. Are we to believe that there are people burning in hell's fire now that will come out after the thousand years? But, there are people in the grave/ hell, and they will come up after the thousand years, There are those who never had a grave, maybe they were burnt, or blown to bits, they are comng straight from death. Our saviour does not have to scorch inan fire, that' only for the devil and His crew
