Woman’s Lament
A soft sigh escapes her lips,
A quiet tear travels down her careworn cheek.
She catches it with a finger, and delicately sips.
Life as she knew it is over,
The divorce was final today.
Love, as she understood a lie
all she can do is cry.
Perfect wife, mother, and lover,
all those things he demanded she be,
Without his guidance, she is nothing
What happened, how could it be?
She looks in the mirror at the old lady that she suddenly seems to have become,
Wonders aloud if he doesn’t see the old beer bellied, jowled man she sees.
The charming new love stroking his ego wants nothing of him but his cash.
For those nights of pleasure, a lifetime is tossed in the trash.
She always thought him a smart man was proud to be his wife.
Now that is ancient history.
How he could be so dumb a mystery.
Now all she wonders is when he turned into an ass
and how they came to this miserable pass.
