Six Self-Analyzing Questions

The New Year is an ideal time for a little self-analyzing. He teaches best what he most needs to learn, so when I tell you this, I’m really telling myself. What you think, feel and say about the circumstances in your life can keep you from acting to remedy situations that need to be resolved. We often lie to ourselves, not consciously, but by accepting circumstantial evidence as truth. And it can keep us from experiencing our power.

1. What career negativity have you accepted? Take a look at your career and explore any kind of programming you have accepted that isn’t serving you. Assumed limitations and faulty assumptions can easily result from a downturn in revenue or a shift in market conditions. This kind of negative thinking can also be related to your self-image, the size of your vision, or your current feelings of power. Until you become aware of such self-imposed beliefs, it is unlikely you’ll do anything to rise above them.

As an example: I’ve been guilty of echoing the New York publishing world in saying, “New Age publishing is a dead genre.?But in reality, although the number of books being published is greatly reduced, new titles continue to come out and plenty of people want to read them. So I’m going to work on a new book.

2. What relationship negativity have you accepted? If you’ve been dwelling upon your partner’s flaws, or a difference of opinion in regard to values or a life direction, have you allowed the differences to become a block to an otherwise good relationship? If so, your expectations are in conflict with what is. Your mate thinks one way, you think another, and that’s what is. You probably won’t be able to change their mind, so can you change your viewpoint?

In most life situations we don’t actually solve problems, except through our viewpointour perspective. By changing your viewpoint you can often eliminate the effects of a problem (so you’re no longer affected). And if you’re no longer affected by a problem you don’t have a problem ... although nothing about the problem situation may have changed.

3. If you don’t have a primary relationship but desire one, what negativity have you accepted in regard to establishing a loving relationship? Fate isn’t going to send a lover to your door while you sit home. You have to act. Go out and meet people. Research studies of single people who are lonely showed they often had rigid and demanding expectations about relationships. Perfectionism is not a positive trait in this area.

If you desire a relationship, ask yourself, what will change when I get what I want? Obviously a lot of things will change. Now, look at the changes you won’t like, because among these changes you’ll find the negative blocks that are keeping you from having what you want.

4. What goal-achievement negativity have you accepted? If you know what you want, what are you doing to get it? It is easy to be discouraged, or to procrastinate when it comes to manifesting your desires. But most change takes time. The secret to success is to keep at it, step- by-step. Be tenacious and use mind-programming to remain focused and accelerate the process.

5. What Universal Laws are you failing to consider? Where your attention goes, your energy flows. The Law of Attractions says that you attract what you are and that which you concentrate upon. If you’re negative, you draw in and experience negativity. If you’re loving, you draw in and experience love. You can attract to you only those qualities you possess. So if you want peace and harmony in your life, you must become peaceful and harmonious. So, where is your attention? What kind of energy are you generating? What are you attracting?

The Law of Attitude says, nothing in the Universe can harm you but your attitude. It is your attitude that moves you toward events and experiences and it is your attitude that will worsen or lighten any event, catastrophe, or tragedy. You and you alone choose the attitude with which you will respond.

6. Have you allowed others to fool you when it comes to self-interest? There are three types of people to consider: 1. Self-actualized people who know they act only in their own self-interest; 2. People who know they act in their own self-interest, but attempt to make you believe otherwise; 3. People who don’t allow themselves to know their own truth and sincerely believe that other people’s interests are put before their own.

Become involved with the first type of person, one who acknowledges how the game of life is played. The second type is attempting to fool you. The third type fools himself and also attempts to fool you.

Anything you want that will add pleasure to your life -- success, love, friendship, freedom, material items -- will cost you in terms of time, energy, money, sacrifice, or any combination of these things. If you don’t accept the cost in advance, you may regret it when the bill comes due.

Glove-Anesthesia
Pain-Control Hypnosis
Main Body of Pain-Control

PH103 Script, By Dick Sutphen

Glove-anesthesia is a powerful pain-control technique that is highly effective when the subject can easily touch the painful area. In the case of lower-back or shoulder pain, it often hurts too much to reach around and touch the troubling area. For back and shoulders, I've created separate CD sessions.

(NOTE: The PAIN-CONTROL CD uses Dick's classic body relaxation and countdown: "Number seven, deeper, deeper, deeper, down, down, down, number six . . ." Once this approximately 10-minute induction is complete, the main body of the program begins.)

And you're now relaxed and at ease and you can awaken at any time by simply counting up from one to five and saying the words, "wide awake." So you're in control of this mind-programming session. And I'm going to begin by providing suggestions which will be communicated to every level of your body and mind, and they'll be accepted on every level of your body and mind.

* Your muscles are relaxed and your mind is at ease. * You have the power and ability to block any sensations you don't want to feel. You do. You accept this. * Focusing the unlimited power of your mind, you can send numbing sensations into any discomfort. * You block all physical sensations you don't want to experience. You have this power. * You block what you don't want to feel. * Allow it to happen. Feel it happening. * You obtain relief when you desire to obtain relief. * Your mind is in control of your body. * You feel better, and better, and better. * Your entire body is relaxed all over in every way, and you're feeling better and better and better. * The word "anesthesia" is your key trigger word for post-hypnotic conditioned response. * And these suggestions have been communicated to every level of your body and mind, and they've been accepted on every level of your body and mind,  and so it is. / / / /  And you know that you must only use this pain-control technique when you know the cause. You will also consult a doctor if the condition persists.

And it's now time to invoke a technique called glove anesthesia. And we'll begin by concentrating upon your dominant hand, which is beginning to lose all feeling. It's all right. Focus your attention upon your hand and allow it to lose all feeling. You hand is becoming numb. No feeling at all. No feeling at all. But I'd like you to help out here, by mentally telling your hand to go to sleep. Tell it to go to sleep. Go to sleep. Your hand is going to sleep. It becomes numb. No feeling at all. No feeling at all. And every breath you take seems to cause your hand to become number, and number, and number, until you just can't feel your hand at all. You just can't feel your hand at all because it is numb. Numb. No feeling. Numb. No feeling. No feeling.

And now . . . you're going to transfer this lack of feeling to the part of your body that you desire to feel numb. So on the count of three you're going to raise your hand and place it upon the part of your body you want to feel numb. And in so doing, you'll transfer this numbness to that portion of your body. / / / /  So get ready now . . . on the count of three, raise your hand and touch the part of your body you want to become cool and numb. Number one . . . number two . . . and number three. Release the numbness into another part of your body. Move your hand and transfer the numbness.

(30 seconds of silence with soothing music continuing.)

And you've now transferred the calming, soothing, numbing coolness, and you're physically feeling better and better and better. Settling down to normal and the coolness permeates the area. You experience wonderful relief. All the tension is gone from your body and mind and you breathe deeply and relax completely, feeling better and better. Calm, cool, soothing, numbing sensations permeates the area. Better and better. Numbness. Relief. Numbness. Relief.

And it's time to focus the incredible power of visualization by imagining yourself having already resolved your current condition and you feel good all the time. You physically feel as good as you've ever felt and you experience joy in this realization. Create every detail of this visualization, including your reaction and the reactions of others. And in so doing you communicate your desire to the levels of mind that will assist you in manifesting the positive outcome. Visualize now while I'm quiet for awhile.

(90 seconds of silence with soothing music continuing.)

And you've just seen your own reality. You have the power and ability to create your own reality. You do, and you accept this. You experience this. And every day in every way you become more powerful in your ability to control your physical and mental reactions to any condition. You know that you must only use this pain-control technique when you know the cause. You will also consult a doctor if the condition persists.

And you are open and accepting of positive suggestions which you will consciously and unconsciously act upon. * Your muscles are relaxed and your mind is at ease. * You have the power and ability to block any sensations you do not want to feel. You do. You accept this. * Focusing the unlimited power of your mind, you can send numbing sensations into any discomfort. * You block all physical sensations you don't want to experience. You can. You accept this. * You block what you don't want to feel. * Allow it to happen. Feel it happening. * You obtain relief when you desire to obtain relief. * You mind is in control of your body.

And I'm now going to give you a key trigger word for post-hypnotic conditioned response. //// Any time you begin to feel discomfort, you will simply stop what you're doing, close your eyes, breathe deeply and say this word quietly to yourself . . . "anesthesia." //// The word "anesthesia is a conditioned response key to your subconscious mind and when you say "anesthesia," you will draw upon the unlimited power of your mind to control physical sensations. When you say "anesthesia," you will feel the cooling numbness you experienced earlier in this session spreading to the part of your body in need of relief. The word "anesthesia" now becomes your key for totally effective conditioned response, and every time you hear this suggestion and every time you use your "anesthesia" programming, it will become more and more effective.  / / / /

And now, once again, it's time to create another visualization in which you perceive yourself feeling good all the time. You feel as good as you've ever felt and you experience joy in this realization. Imagine yourself doing what you most love to do. Create every detail of this visualization. In so doing you communicate your desires to the mental levels that have the power to assist you in manifesting the positive outcome. Visualize now while I'm quiet for awhile.

(90 seconds of silence with soothing music continuing.)

And you've just seen your own reality, and upon awakening, you'll remember all that has been communicated. You'll awaken feeling as if you just had a refreshing nap. Your head will be clear, and you'll think and act with calm self-assurance . . . feeling glad to alive and at peace with yourself the world and everyone in it. So let's come on up now. On the count of five you'll open your eyes and be wide awake. Number one, feel the life blood returning to your arms and legs. Number two, coming on up and at peace with all life. Number three, coming on up feeling an internal balance and harmony. Number for, recall the situation and the room . . . and number five, wide awake, wide awake. Open your eyes and feel good. Number five, wide awake.

Hypnotic Pain Control
By Dick Sutphen

In the News section of Soaring Spirit #73, we included a notice about actor Garrett Morris using self-hypnosis for pain control. This mention generated considerable response from our readers, so I'll begin this article by repeating the story:

"Parade Magazine recently reported on Garrett Morris, a member of the original Saturday Night Live cast who currently appears on the Jamie Foxx Show. Morris was left in critical condition after being shot during a mugging. The bullet lodged in his spine. At first the doctors were not sure the comedian would survive, much less walk again. Morris has had eight operations and developed severe arthritis.

"Today he is able to walk with a cane and manages his chronic pain with self-hypnosis. Even in the light of all modern pain-management technology, self-hypnosis remains the ultra-powerful, drug-free, dependable method to block pain."

Way back in January, 1954, Life magazine ran an article entitled, "The Use of Hypnosis in the Case of the Cancer Patient." I was teenager at the time, but I can still remember reading the story and talking with my parents about it. At about the same time, hypnosis was in the news because of The Search for Bridey Murphy -- the first national publicity for past-life hypnotic regression. I was intrigued. After attending a hypnotic stage show, the seeds of a future career were planted deep in my subconscious mind.

In response to the interest and altered-state-of-consciousness explorations during this period, hypnosis was adopted by the Council of Mental Health of the American Medical Association, and was adopted by the British Medical Association.

It wasn't until the mid 70s that I took self-hypnotic training. But even before the four week class was complete, I had a chance to judge the effectiveness of the technique. While boating with friends, I became seasick and was about to throw up. In a panic, I turned to self-hypnosis. Turning away from the others on board, I pretended to lean on the rail and look at the sea. Closing my eyes, I counted myself down into an altered state of consciousness, and began to think suggestions. Your stomach is now feeling better and better. You easily adjust to the pitch and roll of the boat and enjoy it. Your head is clear, your stomach feels perfectly normal and you're glad to be out on the sea. I also visualized myself opening my eyes and feeling fine.

The whole process took five minutes and upon awakening to full beta-consciousness,  I felt perfectly normal. No more sea sickness.

I decided on the spot that hypnosis was something I needed to further explore.

I used pain control suggestions for headaches, but I didn't have any real personal pain to experiment with . . . until it was time to have a cavity filled. I told my dentist, "Just give me about three minutes. By then I'll be in deep hypnosis and I'll block any pain from the drilling. Just tell me what you want me to do and I'll respond."

My dentist didn't believe it would work. "It's a deep cavity," he said. "When it starts to really hurt, tell me and I'll give you the shot."

For the next forty minutes I imagined myself exploring an imaginary world while my dentist worked on my tooth. No pain killers were needed.

"I don't believe you did that," he said, when it was over.

I blocked pain while receiving stitches a few months later. Again, self-hypnotic pain control worked.

After more hypnotic training, I began to work with others. I made a pain blocking and healing acceleration tape for a friend who was in a terrible motorcycle accident. He said later that it saved his life. When I knew of people needing surgery, I made them pre-surgery and post-surgery tapes. The responses were so positive, I began to take the study of hypnosis very seriously.

In the seventies, I read an article titled "Hypnotic Control of Menstrual Pain" by Drs. William S. Kroger and S. Charles Freed. In one of the case histories, the 17-year old patient was taught self-hypnosis to deal with menstrual problems she had experienced since age nine. Always irregular, she experienced so much pain that the first 24 to 36 hours of her period were spent in bed. The pain consisted of acute lower abdominal cramps accompanied by considerable nervousness, nausea and tension. She had received extensive therapy including dilatation and curettage, analgesics and endocrine preparations.

When nothing else was successful the doctors tried hypnosis and positive suggestions. The girl was taught self-hypnosis and told to reinforce the hypnotist's suggestions at bedtime. Over the next 27 days the girl visited the hypnotist seven times. A week after her last appointment, she started her period and was remarkably free of pain although she still experienced minor leg cramps. Over the next month, she visited the hypnotist weekly and when her next period arrived, she was entirely normal in every respect. For the following year, without further hypnotic sessions, she was free of menstrual pain, nervousness and discomfort, and her periods became regular.

Case histories like this encouraged me to explore the use of hypnotic tapes. For many situations, a tape could accomplish the same thing at home that a hypnotist would do in his office. The response from people who used the tapes was phenomenal.  My interest in hypnosis soon became my career.

Now, twenty-some years later, hypnosis has been accepted by medical and holistic practitioners around the world. The techniques have been used successfully for open-heart surgery, dentistry, childbirth, stomach ulcers, skin disorders, and to accelerate healing.

The only danger in using pain-control hypnosis, is that a subject may block the pain and avoid going to the doctor. Because of this, I include a hypnotic suggestion that the listener will go to the doctor if the pain continues. If the suggestions are strong enough to alleviate the pain, they will be strong enough to motivate a visit to the doctor if the condition persists.
