Super Foods of the 90's

By Ellen Piernick - Holistic Nutritionist

At a time when environmental toxins, stress , and a fast paced lifestyle threaten to overwhelm us, superfoods offer a great deal of promise. Research continues to show that it is better to get your nutritional support from valuable, living, whole foods rather than synthetic vitamins and minerals.

Remember, enzymes are extremely important; they are the only reason we are alive; without them there is no life! Let’s take the almond example. Take two almonds, boil one and not the other. Plant them both in soil and give both plenty of sunshine, water, and TLC. Which one do you think will sprout? The one not boiled of course! Why? You ask, simple; because the enzymes were not destroyed.

Superfoods are concentrated potent sources of vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, enzymes, antioxidants, phytonutrients, fiber, and the essential amino acids, which reputedly add alkalinity to our system, balance us, increase our energy, enhance our immune system, improve stamina, sharpen mental activity, and help to deodorize and cleanse our colon, liver, and cells!

Superfoods are a return to the basics of the food chain; generally they are organically grown in a chemical free environment and spray dried rather than heat processed in order to preserve the vital, alive, enzyme activity. These concentrated nutrient rich superfood powders can then be mixed with either water or juice and consumed in liquid form. By taking these nutrients in liquid form as opposed to tablets, which usually have all sorts of binders and fillers included, absorption levels are greatly enhanced. Let’s look at an example with carrots. If you ate 100 carrots, your body would recognize them as whole, enzymatically alive foods, and therefore would only convert and absorb only as much vitamin A from the beta-carotene in those carrots as needed. However, if you took the same amount of vitamin A in the form of synthetic, processed pills, it could be dangerous and toxic to your body! That is because our bodies do not really understand "synthetic nutrients", in a "synthetic form". You can best be assured that absorption levels from vitamin pills are nowhere near as high as they are with enzymatically alive, whole foods. Also keep in mind that vitamin pills must get broken down by the liver which can be very taxing on this organ, especially when many, many pills are being consumed on a daily basis.

Alfalfa, barley, and wheat grass, lecithin, spirulina, chlorella, royal jelly, carob, flax seed meal, ginger, ginseng, red dulse, non-dairy probiotics, slippery elm, and grape seed extract, (just to name a few) are examples of super packed nutrients that help to strengthen our immune systems, and neutralize toxins.

"Have you had your Greens Today®"? How often do we hear that? We all are constantly reminded that we must eat our vegetables daily in order to get the nutrients our bodies desire. Well now there is a way to "drink your greens", as well as all other superfoods, phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Let's look at a few of these superfoods more closely.

Pleasant tasting alfalfa is actually a lentil not really a grass. It is one of the most nourishing greens on this planet! One reason is because the roots of alfalfa reach deeper into the soil than those of any other vegetable, as much as 10 to 30 feet! Included in 100 grams of alfalfa are 89000 I.U. of beta-carotene, 200,000 I.U. of vitamin K (which helps the blood to clot properly), as well as liberal amounts of vitamin E and D. The chlorophyll in alfalfa helps to deodorize and clean up the intestinal tract.

Barley grass is also a remarkable food. Dr. Howard Lutz, director of the Institute of Preventative Medicine in Washington, said "barley grass improves stamina, clarity of thought, and reduces addiction to things that are bad for you". Barley grass helps to improve the texture of the skin (especially when combined with the wondrous herb horsetail which contains potent amounts of silica) and heals the dryness associated with aging. Barley juice powder contains four times more vitamin B1 than whole wheat flour and 30 times more than milk; three times more vitamin C than spinach; seven times more than oranges; and five times more iron than liver.

Wheat grass is one of nature’s best source of iron, fiber, zinc, chlorophyll, vitamins A, C, and K. Wheat grass has a total of 90 minerals in all! It has a greater percentage of protein than eggs, and provides an incredible amount of beta-carotene as well. A 1982 report of the National Academy of Sciences entitled "Diet, Nutrition, and Cancer Status" reported that "epidemiological research is sufficient to suggest that foods rich in carotenes are associated with a reduced risk of cancer."

Lecithin is found in every living cell in our bodies; our brain in dry composition is actually 30% lecithin. In the brain, lecithin choline is transformed to acetylcholine which is a vital compound for the transmission of messages from one nerve ending to another. This has a proven effect on memory, thinking ability, and muscle control. In the bloodstream, lecithin helps to [prevent cholesterol and other fats from accumulating on the walls of the arteries and helps to dissolve deposits that may already be there. In the liver lecithin helps to metabolize clogging fat and lessens the chance of liver degeneration.

Spirulina has grown on the earth for 4.5 billion years and is at the basis of the food chain! It was the first photosynthetic life form and helped to create the earth’s oxygen atmosphere. Spirulina is the richest food source of vitamin B12 and contains twice the amount of this vitamin as the equivalent in liver. It is 65% easily digested biologically complete protein (beef is only 22% in comparison). Spirulina contains beta-carotene with ten times the concentration than that found in carrots. Beta-carotene works with lecithin to help maintain the body’s mucous membranes which are the first line of defense in the nostrils, mouth, and cervix, against viruses, bacteria, allergens, and toxic chemicals.

Another sensational superfood is the small one celled green fresh water algae called chlorella. It is eaten widely in Japan, where it is used to protect against radiation and highly toxic air pollution. Chlorella has been on The earth for over 2.5 billion years. Scientists say that chlorella has survived in modern times due to it’s inherent ability to effectively repair it’s own DNA . In ideal environments it can multiply very quickly; quadrupling itself every 17-20 hours. It has nearly twice the protein of soy, and eight times that of rice. It also contains an astonishing amount of chlorophyll; 20 times then the amount in alfalfa, ten times the amount in spirulina, and eight times the amount in wheat grass. Scientific studies have found that chlorella helps to detoxify the body of such pollutants as heavy metals, and pesticides. Chlorophyll is a highly recommended health food in its own right. It is a major league detoxifying and deodorizing agent in the mouth, colon, stomach, and individual cells. It is used by health professionals to help heal severe infections, skin disorders, colds, flu, and inflammation.

Royal Jelly is well known for its ability to support immune functions. Royal Jelly; the bee’s milk as it is commonly referred to ,is the concentrated superfood responsible for turning an ordinary worker bee into a long-lived reproductive dynamo: the queen bee. It is her only food source. The queen bee grows 40-60% larger than her worker bees and lives for up to 5 full years where her counterpart lives for only 5 months! Royal Jelly also contains 22 amino acids and notable quantities of minerals like calcium, copper, iron, and potassium.

Another powerful superfood is the Acerola berry.  Acerola contains the most potent source of natural vitamin C and bioflavanoids. Because the body does not store vitamin C, it must be replenished on a daily basis. Bioflavanoids work synergistically with the Vitamin C to protect and preserve the structure of capillary blood vessels. They also help to promote circulation as well as stimulate the production of bile in the liver. And last but not least, the Acerola berry is extremely useful in the colon where it helps to balance the pH level to allow for proper colon function.

We must not forget one of the most important superfoods for our bodies;

Non-dairy probiotics. These beneficial lactobacilli restore a balance of microflora which is necessary for a healthy colon environment. Commonly known as "friendly bacteria" these various strains fortify the intestinal tract and help break down proteins, fats, and starches to ensure proper absorption of nutrients. These probiotics manufacture natural antibiotics that destroy pathogenic (disease causing) bacteria. Probiotics also need to have food in order to thrive and multiply and act as your "army" in your colon. Their preferred food source is actually another powerful superfood called

F.O.S. (fructo-oligosaccharides )- this food primarily comes from Jerusalem artichokes, asparagus, and soybeans. FOS acts as a strong synergist for the implantation and growth of friendly bacteria. FOS is a plant sugar which is non-digestible to humans. FOS passes through the digestive system unchanged until they reach the large intestine where they will feed the probiotics. FOS has also been found to be a top rate regulator for

Maintaining proper blood sugar levels.

Superfoods are the wave of the future! By being able to take in these amazing foods in a synergistic blend, we can offer our bodies the most complete symphony of powerful immune enhancing, energizing, and cleansing nutrients our bodies have ever experienced!

Superfoods: Who Knew?

May 17, 2007:- If I had a dollar for every time the conventional wisdom on nutrition has shifted gears, I'd be a rich woman. Remember butter? And how about eggs? First they're evil, now they're our best friends. I've watched the experts flip recommendations on so many foods I've lost count. Some of these foods suffered from bad reputations for years, but are now back on our buddy lists... others were unsung heroes, always good for us but never getting proper credit. I think it is a good idea to periodically revisit some of our cherished beliefs about foods and health, so I spoke with Jonny Bowden, whose recent book, The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth [http://link.dhn.bottomlinesecrets.com/h/AD5F/2Z06/SN/202LS] (Fair Winds Press) has some surprising entries -- and some surprising omissions.

FAT CAN BE YOUR FRIEND

"Many foods suffered from bad reputations in the past because of the deeply held belief that all saturated fat is bad for you," Bowden said. "Saturated fat is the general name for a collection of fatty acids -- and some of these fatty acids are really good for you." For example, he says, "two of the healthiest foods on earth are whole eggs and coconut. Yet to this day people eat 'Egg Beaters' and shun coconut oil because of the saturated fat."

EGGS - GREAT PROTEIN SOURCE

Bowden believes whole eggs are among the finest sources of protein on the planet. "On three of the four methods used by scientists for rating protein quality, eggs score better than milk, beef, whey and soy," he told me. (All four -- milk, beef, whey and soy -- are tied on the other commonly used rating system.) "Whole eggs contain all nine essential amino acids, plus they're loaded with vitamins and nutrients that are excellent for your eyes, brain and heart." Bowden explained that the fear of saturated fat causes people to shun one of the healthiest parts of the egg -- the yolk. "The yolk contains lutein and zeaxanthin, two members of the carotenoid family that are emerging as superstars of eye nutrition. And the yolk is also one of the best sources of choline."

Choline, says Bowden, is a building block for important compounds in the body that help support the heart, brain and liver. "Choline creates betaine, which helps lower homocysteine, a risk factor for heart disease. It's part of a compound called phosphatidylcholine that helps prevent the accumulation of fat and cholesterol in the liver. It's also needed to make acetyl-choline, which is critical for memory and thought." Incidentally, he didn't perceive the amount of cholesterol in whole eggs as a problem. "Virtually every study has shown absolutely no link between eating eggs and heart disease," he told me.

NUTS FOR COCONUTS

Another surprising powerhouse is coconut, which Bowden believes is headed to the top of the food charts among knowledgeable nutrition gurus. "In my view, coconut and coconut oil are superfoods," he told me. A half-cup of shredded coconut has almost 4 grams of fiber, 142 mg of potassium and almost no sugar. As for the saturated fat, he explained that in coconut, 50% of it comes from a fatty acid called lauric acid, which is anti-viral and anti-microbial, and enhances the immune system. As for those saturated tropical fats that give coconuts a bad reputation... the saturated fat in coconut oil comes mostly from a family called MCTs or medium-chain triglycerides, making it particularly easy to metabolize. "The body likes to use it as a source of energy, rather than as a source of padding," said Bowden. "Long-term studies of people from the Pacific Islands who eat coconut and coconut oil regularly show that they have extremely low levels of heart disease."

BUTTER BARGAIN

Bowden even has kind words to say about butter. "It's a rich source of vitamin A, needed both for maintaining good vision and the optimal functioning of the immune system. Butter also contains other fat-soluble vitamins, like vitamin K and vitamin D. And when it is made from the milk of healthy, grass-fed cows, butter contains CLA (conjugated linolenic acid), a kind of fat that has proven anti-cancer properties."

HEALTHY BREWS

Long thought to be a health faux pas, Bowden told me that coffee is actually a major source of antioxidants in the American diet. "Caffeine is good for the brain," he explained, "and new studies show that it may be protective against diabetes and Parkinson's too. As long as you're not sensitive to the caffeine and you don't overdo it, coffee is fine for you." He also reminded me that black tea is nearly as good for you as its more popular cousin, green tea, because it, too, is loaded with flavonoids and catechins and antioxidants. But be aware that adding milk to your tea disables the antioxidants, so best to take it straight, with lemon or with your favorite sweetener.

NATURAL DISEASE FIGHTERS

Then there are the foods that are the unrecognized multitaskers in the health tool chest -- like pumpkin. It has more potassium than a medium banana, is loaded with vitamin A, and has two carotenoids that are beneficial for the eyes -- lutein and zeaxanthin. "Plus, pumpkin has less than 50 calories per cup, and you can season it with all kinds of great spices like cinnamon and nutmeg," adds Bowden. Another favorite is guava. "Guava has a whopping 9 grams of fiber per cup. It's another potassium heavyweight, and it contains the cancer-fighting compound called lycopene," he said.

Another unappreciated fruit -- cherries. These are loaded with quercetin and ellegic acid, two cancer-fighters. In addition, cherries have lots of natural anti-inflammatories, which is why they've traditionally been used to fight the pain of gout. While cherries are generally a summer treat, frozen cherries contain the same nutritional value as fresh, ripe fruit.

Read Monday's issue of Daily Health News for the other side of this story -- foods you thought were good for you, but actually are not.
