Orange Oil According to Dr. Wright, an orange-oil spray to successfully get rid of bugs. He swears that with repeated application, ants, other creeping critters, and even some houseplant pests will stay away. Some of the little buggers even die when directly sprayed with it! And, not only is orange oil generally environmentally safe, but it smells good, too!
The discovery (or, more likely, rediscovery) of the insect-repelling properties of orange oil appears to have been made at an oranges-to-orange-juice processing facility down South, home to (among other things) fire ants, a species of insect noxious to humans and other animal life.
Workers at the juice factory threw out a quantity of orange peel, which more or less covered a fire-ant nest. On removing the peels for final disposal, it was observed that the fire ants beneath were dead. Investigation traced the effect to the oil in the orange peels.
You can buy orange-oil spray in natural-food stores, some regular grocery stores, or you can get it at the Tahoma Clinic. But at most stores it's usually labeled as a "grease cutter," or "air freshener." The labels say nothing at all about using it as bug repellant or "bugicide." Dr. Wright assures me that this has nothing to do with how effective the sprays are at getting rid of bugs. He suggests that it's likely that making such a true claim would lead to literally millions of dollars in approval costs paid to the EPA, FDA, FTC, or whichever Washington, D.C., based non-Constitutional agency decides it wants the money and can first grab "jurisdiction." Keep in mind that orange-oil spray must be applied more frequently (sometimes daily) than toxic chemical pesticides. And, unfortunately, a small minority of insects don't seem to mind orange oil at all. by Amanda Ross, Nutrition & Healing, www.wrightnewsletter.com Pest Control Ants: Sugar Ant Hotel Bugs: Keep Bugs Away Outdoors - How To Dust Mite Neutralizer Fleas: Fabulous Formulas To Be Free of Fleas Flies: Repel Flies Naturally Garden: Best Ever Garlic Spray for Garden Pests Insect: Easily Custom Make Your Own Insect Repellent -- How-To Lice: Safely Eliminating Head Lice Mice: No More Mice! INDEPTH: PESTICIDES Pesticide recipes CBC News Online
HOMEMADE ORGANIC PESTICIDE RECIPES AND NATURAL REMEDIES: There are lots of organic pesticides now available at lawn and garden centres, but many can be made easily at home. While these natural mixtures are biodegradable, use them sparingly, since they will kill the good bugs such as spiders and ladybugs, along with the bad ones. Rhubarb insecticide Boil 500 grams of rhubarb leaves in a few pints of water for about 20 minutes, allow to cool, then strain the liquid into a suitable container. Add some dish detergent or soap flakes (not laundry detergent!) and spray on leaves to kill off all kinds of bugs like aphids and spider mites. * NOTE: Rhubarb leaves contain high amounts of oxalic acid. If ingested, your heart will stop and you will die. Garlic and soap insecticide Pulverize in a blender a couple of whole cayenne peppers, a large onion and a whole bulb of garlic with a little water. Cover this mash with a gallon of water, let stand 24 hours and strain. Spray daily on roses, azaleas, and vegetables to kill an infestation of bugs. Don't throw away the mash; bury it among the plants where insects occur. All-purpose weed killer Boil a litre of water, add 2 tablespoons of salt and 5 tablespoons of vinegar. Pour directly on weeds on sidewalks, driveways, etc. while still hot. Animal repellent sprays Cats: two parts cayeene power, three parts dry mustard powder, five parts flour and add sufficient water. Dogs: mix together one garlic, one medium onion, one litre water and 15 ml Tobasco sauce. Squirrels: blend together 15 ml Tobasco sauce and chili powder, 5 litres water and a dash of dish soap.
