Why are children at greater risk?

Reporter: Wendy Mesley; Producer: Gaelyne Leslie; Researcher: Louisa Jaslow
Dr. Gideon Koren is a pediatrician at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

Koren says young children are especially vulnerable, partly because of exposure. Everything goes in their mouths and they virtually live on the floor:

Their body systems and organs are not fully developed (developing organs are more sensitive to environmental toxicants): a newborn baby has the “framework?for the structures that control respiration, heartbeat, reflexes and bone growth but the organ development continues for 10 ?15 years.

Neurological development is ongoing during childhood, with very crucial stages occurring during pregnancy, infancy and early childhood.

The way in which, and extent to which they metabolize chemicals are very different than in adults.

They exhibit behaviours that increase their contact with chemical toxicants (closer to the floor, i.e. their breathing zone is different, hand to mouth activity, time spent indoors, play).

The author of Why David Hated Tuesdays and founder of Soapworks was interviewed on my morning TV show today, her experience impressed me so I'll share a little of the information available here:

Amilya's Story
Did you know that one in seven people, that is over 40 million Americans, are now considered chemically sensitive? Research shows that some people who have sensitivities to the harsh chemicals found in many ordinary household cleaning products may experience reactions such as headaches, fatigue, skin rashes,  and in the worst cases depression, emotional outbursts and insomnia.  ...................

Why David Hated Tuesdays
gives me an opportunity to share with you what I have learned from my struggles and battles with my son’s health challenges. I will walk you through what I have learned about chemicals, hidden toxins, and alternative products that will help you create a home that is organized and as human friendly as possible. All that you will read I learned through my mistakes, the obstacles I faced, and the doubts that I had about my own strength to get me through each crisis, and the many tears I shed over the past 10 years.

I invite you to join me ....................
