There is some disturbing new news out about plastics: Exposure to a small amount of polycarbonate plastic can increase a person’s risk of diabetes and insulin resistance, according to a new study on mice. The chemical of concern is bisphenol-A, a known endocrine disrupter that mimics the effects of crucial hormones in the body such as estrogen, and it is found in a frightening array of products including baby bottles, dental sealants, hard plastic bottles, and more. I've written earlier blogs about Bisphenol-A. My dentist is now working on finding an alternative to Bisphenol-A dental sealants, and with this new information about the connection between diabetes and plastic, one can't help but wonder if the dental sealants could be affecting the skyrocketing diabetes epidemic.
What alternatives to plastic can you think of for food storatge and kids' lunch boxes? Other plastics?
