Carissimo *my name removed*,

Thank you for contacting Technical Support for Windows MSN Groups.  My name is Martin and I will be addressing your concerns over the closure of MSN Groups.

This resource supplies information on closing MSN Groups, comprised all the relative information regarding the closure of Groups:(http://msngroupsresourcecenter.spaces.live.com).   The service is to close on February 21, 2009.   Groups may be used until that day, but afterwards, no content can be added.

MSN has partnered with Multiply, a media group service, in order to create a migration process geared towards preserving the online community and it's history.  In addition, a new service, Windows Live Groups, will be launching on November 17, 2008.

Exisiting customers will have three options for moving groups to a new service:

1.  You may automatically move your group to Multiply.  This option is free and easy to use.  You may move the content of your group and invite members to join your group on that service.

2.  To start from scratch using another service.  However, we recommend using the automatic transfer to Multiply.  This will afford an easy transition and allow your group members to continue to enjoy the community you have created.

3.  To start from scratch using Windows Live Groups.  In order to expand our available services, Windows Live will be launching Windows Live Groups to the public on November 17, 2008.

This just in from another group

You may have heard rumors that MSN Groups will in closing, I’d like to respond to those here so that our most active users have the information you need to manage your groups effectively.  It is true that we are planning to close the MSN Groups service on February 21, 2009 and will offer you the opportunity to move your group to our new partner service, Multiply.  We understand the importance of keeping your group together, so we partnered with Multiply to create a migration process that moves your group to their service to preserve your online community and its history.

The migration method that Multiply has built for you is still in the beta stage, we plan to open it next week.  Once the service is ready we’ll be sending all of our users an email and will post notices within the MSN Groups site with more information, including instructions for beginning the migration process.  In the meantime I encourage you to visit http://Multiply.com to get to know the service and see some of the thousands of groups they host already.

The natural question to ask in this situation is why we are closing MSN Groups.  It is our goal to provide our customers with the most current and user friendly technology available today.  We made the difficult decision to close the MSN Groups service as part of an overall investment in updating and re-aligning our online services with Windows Live. In the long term we believe that closing the service is the best way to continue to offer innovative, best of breed services that help you stay in touch with the people you care about.  It’s very important to us that you keep the data you created using MSN Groups and that is why we have partnered with Multiply, so you can keep your group going into the future despite the closure of MSN Groups.

Between today and February 21, 2009 the MSN Groups service will remain the same as it is now. We will remove the option to add more storage to your group but other features will remain until the service is shut down and you can use it the same way you do today until the date of closure.  Watch the site and your email inbox over the next week as we will post updated information there, including a more detailed outline of your options and next steps.

Regards,

Charlotte Jones, Group Product Manager, Microsoft

There is NOTHING posted on the MSN Groups Homepage. This leans me toward wondering if this is a hoax for "Multiply" to get more members. This needs investigation before any rash moves. Stevo

Also, the Judy in the first post is a manager at Community Feedback and they really check these things out. I have started a test group at Multiply to see how it works. So far, I don't like it. Looks like any blog to me. I don't know what the Windows Live Groups will be like.

From another group...(mentioned in text):

MSN just gave us a good quick kick in the bum.  Let's not make it worse by acting emotionally and irrationally and doing things we will later regret.  Don't abandon your MSN groups.  Your members need you to maintain them now more than ever.  Don't be in a hurry to migrate or move anywhere.  Assure them that collectively as a group you will survive.  It may not be on MSN, but you will survive.  You may wind up with something better.
Chat Central Gateway has been through this when it was still a relative baby.  We had less than a thousand members and only a handfull of active chatters when MSN announced they were canning chat.  Many jumped ship and bailed.  I guess they figured a group that was chat based was a dead ducky.  With Your help, we not only survived, but we have grown to almost 10,000 members with hundreds of active groups usingOur Chat services... our chat services that are completely independant of MSN and will survive beyond MSN.
We have several months to figure out how to fix this impending mess.  Help us help you.  Take the time to educate yourself by asking questions on relative threads.  We may have a series of Q & A chats as well as polls on the boards.  Take the time to attend and participate.
We have no immediate plans for migrating this group, deleting it or transferring its contents anywhere.  We have not explored all our options yet.  We will announce it well in advance before we do anything.  We recomend that you accord your membership the same courtesy.

From, still, another group...I don't know what to believe!!!!

This is an email FROM a real MSN support contact person.

My name is Dolores and I am a Subject Matter within MSN Groups department. Your e-mail was escalated to me and I would like to assist you with your concern about the information you saw that MSN Groups is closing down and that it will be changed to Windows Live Groups.

I realize how important MSN Groups is to you. I appreciate that you have written to us regarding this.

the posting you saw is a hoax. MSN Groups is not closing down and Microsoft has no plans of decommissioning MSN Groups at this time.

Microsoft has no control over email messages, Web sites, or postings that imitate company trademarks, logos, or copyrighted materials. The sources of these hoaxes only attempt to spread malicious rumors about Microsoft and may sometimes even encourage people to divulge personal information willingly. This information is frequently used maliciously or fraudulently.

To avoid the spread of these types of information, we advise you to delete any email you receive, or disregard postings on MSN Groups regarding this rumor.

Any important announcement from Microsoft about MSN Groups will be posted at the MSN Groups homepage (http://groups.msn.com).

On the other hand, it is true that Windows Live Groups is coming in the future, but it is a separate product. As of this time, we do not have any information yet about the features of Windows Live Groups.

We appreciate your continued support as we strive to provide you with the highest quality service available. Thank you for using MSN Groups.

Sincerely,

The following was posted in Community Feedback by Manager Judy. I don't think it is a hoax. Not with the Washington Post doing a piece on it. I will let this group migrate over to Multiply since they will do it for free. As a manager I am supposed to be getting information on what all is going to happen and how to let any members that want to join know how they go about that. I am also looking at other sites. I have started Kat.Place at Gaia. It is pretty cool. You can make your own avatar. I am still trying to figure out how to start a group. I am looking at Google too. There is always Yahoo.

That letter has been posted here several times.  What is not being mentioned in groups where people are clinging to it for hope is that it dates back to 2007 when Windows Live Groups beta pages were briefly available online and the people who saw them flooded Contact with letters asking if MSN groups were becoming Windows Live Groups.

When you see that letter posted in a group, you would be doing the group's members a huge favor by posting that, while the letter is legitmate, it is a year old and no longer valid.  Then ask them to click the Feedback   link at the bottom of any groups page and write to Contact to inquire about the current status of groups.  They will get a very different answer.  This is not a hoax.  It is happening.
