'Idol' Taylor Hicks Signs Record Deal
The Associated Press Wednesday, May 31, 2006; 7:05 PM
NEW YORK -- Taylor Hicks has taken step two on his "American Idol"-fueled career, signing the record contract that comes with winning the hit show.
The gray-haired crooner inked a pact with music mogul Clive Davis in conjunction with 19 Recordings Unlimited, the label managed by "AI" creator Simon Fuller, it was announced Wednesday.
The 29-year-old Alabama native's recording of two songs _ "Do I Make You Proud," which he performed in the show's finale, and a soulful cover of the Doobie Brothers classic "Takin' It to the Streets" _ will be released in stores and through digital outlets on June 13.
With Davis' guidance, Hicks is expected to release a full-length album later this year.
In a recent interview with The Associated Press, Davis, who has molded the careers of previous "Idol" winners, said he thinks Hicks has charisma and a unique singing style that will help him establish his pop audience.
"He definitely has his own sound," Davis told the AP. "He does have that gift, you know who it is when you hear him." |

'Idol' Winner Hicks Joins 19/Arista May 31, 2006, 5:30 PM ET
Taylor Hicks, the winner of this year's "American Idol," has signed with show creator Simon Fuller's 19 Recordings Limited and Arista Records. "Do I Make You Proud," which he sang to close the May 24 finale on Fox, will be released as the Alabama native's first single on June 13. His debut album is expected later this year.
Another track from the 29-year-old Hicks, a cover of the Doobie Brothers' "Takin' It to the Streets," was made available last week on the "American Idol Season 5: Encores" (RCA) compilation. The set scored the No. 3 spot on The Billboard 200 this week.
Hicks joins the previous "Idol" winners such as Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Fantasia in signing a contract with an RCA-affiliated label as part of his winnings.
According to reports, an estimated 36.4 million people tuned in to the May 24 finale, the third biggest audience draw this year behind the Super Bowl and the Academy Awards. |

I hope the Doobie's remake gets more airplay and bigger ratings. Whomever AI has contracted with to write their songs just gets worse and worse and worse. I just can't wait until this is over with and he can release something worth listening to. |

I know what you mean, Smig. I don't know how many albums/years he's locked into. Hopefully he'll do a Christmas album to knock one of the contracted CDs off. I would LOVE to have a Taylor Christmas CD! |
