Valerie Laken
Dream House
7:00 p.m. reading, Downer Ave.
Pushcart Prize-winner and UWM creative writing teacher Valerie Laken’s debut novel explores the connection between property and intimacy, and reveals the price people pay to hold their dreams and homes together. Kate and Stuart moved into a fixer-upper hoping to mend their marriage and the house, but the discovery that the house was the scene of a terrible crime is too much for their marriage to bear. When Walker, newly released from prison, returns to the scene of the crime Kate is forced to confront her own illusions and choices.

Jodi Picoult Live

Handle With Care
Tuesday, March 17, 2009, 7:00 p.m.

PicoultBestselling author Jodi Picoult returns to Schwartz Live at Alverno Presents with the gripping story of a family forced to confront an impossible question. The O'Keefe's daughter, Willow, was born with a terrible disease. Medical bills are piling up and the daily struggle to keep her safe is increasingly difficult. Her mother, Charlotte, thinks she has figured out a way to make ends meet, but it would mean filing a wrongful birth lawsuit against her ob/gyn. If she goes through with it, she will have to testify that she would have terminated the pregnancy--words her husband can't abide and Charlotte can't reconcile. With her trademark compassion and page-turning prose, Jodi Picoult explores the knotty tangle of medical ethics and personal morality in Handle With Care.

Tickets to this event are $35 and include admission and a signed copy of Handle With Care. Order your tickets today.
