What You Drive May Indicate Who You'll Vote For

<TEXT id=txt_posted>POSTED:</TEXT> 1:16 pm EDT October 4, 2004

Someone looking at your driveway may be able to get a good idea who you'll vote for on Nov. 2, even if you don't have a yard sign proclaiming your choice.

According to the new study by Kelley Blue Book, you're more likely to vote for President George W. Bush if you drive a Mercury, Ford, GMC or Chevy.
If you drive a Hyundai, Toyota or a Subaru, you'll likely go for Sen. John Kerry.

The online poll of 2,500 voters found that although independent candidate Ralph Nader did not carry the vote among any brand, he did garner the most support from drivers of the now defunct GM brand Oldsmobile.

The study also showed that voters support candidates with similar vehicles to their own. Bush has made it known that he drives a Ford F-250 on his ranch in Crawford, Texas. He has heavy support from drivers of large SUVs and full-size pickup trucks like the Chevy Suburban or Ford F-Series trucks.

Kerry's family owns several cars, but he is best known for driving an old Dodge convertible around Washington, D.C. The study showed Kerry snagging votes from just over half of convertible drivers.

Five of six hybrid drivers participating in this study were squarely in Kerry's corner, though it is believed that Nader drives one.

Overall, the survey showed Bush winning the election among drivers by 20 points.

"We ran this same poll four years ago and correctly predicted that Bush would edge out Al Gore," said Stephen Henson, executive vice president, sales and marketing, Kelley Blue Book.
