MIMOSA: Little known facts surrounding the Welsh colony in Patagonia
In 1865, 160 Welsh settlers arrived in Patagonia on the clipper ship Mimosa where they had hoped to establish a colony where their language and traditions might be preserved. Five children had died on the voyage, while two had been born. The conditions in Patagonia were such that others would also die.
On Thursday, March 15, at 7 p.m., in the auditorium of the British Arts Centre (BAC), Suipacha 1333, Capital Federal, Susan Wilkinson will give a lecture on little known facts surrounding the Welsh immigration to Patagonia —the conditions in Wales and Liverpool that led to the creation of the Welsh Colony in Patagonia, the difficulties in finding a ship to transport the colonists, the difficulties and dangers of the voyage, and the disillusionment experienced upon arrival. The lecture, which will be given in English, is organized conjointly by the Club
Europeo and the Asociación Argentina de Cultura Inglesa.
Susan Wilkinson is the author of Sebastian’s Pride, translated into Spanish under the title of Don Sebastián, and of a book on the Mimosa to be published this year in Wales. Her great-great-uncle was the doctor on the Mimosa, who accompanied the Welsh to Patagonia. She has spoken on the voyage to Patagonia in London, Cardiff and Puerto Madryn and will be participating in a two-day "Mimosa Festival" taking place in Liverpool in the summer of 2008, when Liverpool will be the European City of Culture. Susan Wilkinson has spoken at the Legislature Palace on Buenos
Aires and World Culture in 2004, in dialogue with Dr. Félix Luna, sponsored by the Legislature of the City of Buenos Aires and the Canadian embassy.

El jueves 15 de marzo a las 19 horas en el auditorio del British Arts Centre (BAC), Suipacha 1333, Capital Federal, la escritora Susan Wilkinson —afamada autora de la novela Sebastian’s Pride�?ofrecerá una conferencia en la que presentará detalles desconocidos de la inmigración galesa a la República Argentina. Los primeros colonos galeses llegaron en el buque Mimosa, que, como el Mayflower, se transformó en símbolo de la búsqueda de otros horizontes, prometidos por estas tierras, abiertas a la aventura y al progreso humano.
La conferencia de Susan Wilkinson describe los acontecimientos en Gales y Liverpool que llevaron a la creación de la colonia galesa en Argentina, las dificultades para conseguir un buque que transportara a los colonos, las penurias y peligros del viaje y la desilusión que tuvieron al llegar.
La presentación de Susan Wilkinson está organizada conjuntamente por el Club Europeo y la Asociación Argentina de Cultura Inglesa.

Susan Wilkinson es la autora de Sebastian’s Pride (Londres 1988, MacDonald & Co.) —novela traducida al castellano con el título de Don Sebastián (Javier Vergara Editor) �?y de un libro sobre el Mimosa, de próxima publicación en Gales. Su tío bisabuelo era el médico que acompañó a los colonos galeses a bordo del Mimosa. Susan Wilkinson habló sobre el viaje a la Patagonia en Cardiff, Londres y Puerto Madryn y participará del Festival Mimosa, que durará dos días y tendrá lugar en Liverpool en el verano de 2008, año en que esa ciudad será la Capital Europea de la Cultura. Susan Wilkinson se presentó con Félix Luna en la Legislatura de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, en el ciclo Buenos Aires en la Cultura Universal, auspiciado por la Embajada de Canadá.

Right now, there are a number of cities like Trevellin, Madryn and others, where the Welsh presence is very strong. Choir competitions, in welsh, english and spanish. The argentines of welsh origin, are very proud of their heritage, and at the same time are very friendly, very nice people if you ever come to visit Patagonia, that is southern Argentina,you will feel at home. |
