News pix showin' it's really a mess out there in the heart-land ....sympathies & empathies are with y'all.
Yeah,....been there, done that, got the tee-shirt... have had several of them "icer's", luckily they're few & far between in our neck of the woods....but when they do hit it's a real bother.
Last one here was about 10 year ago or so. Was outa' 'tricity 14 days. Took 3 days chain-sawin' & haulin' to clear the trees off our quarter mile driveway so's we could drive out....didn't help at first, took the road crews 5 days to clear the trees off the county road so's the mail (or any thing else) could get through.
The ice had built up 1/2-1 inch on the tree limbs, the pliable hardwoods bent & drooped but the brittle pine limbs started snapping under the weight. Sounded like shotguns goin' off all night. First the boom of the break & then the tinkle of the ice hitting the ground like bird shot on a tin roof, lol. Limbs stuck in the ground, standing straight-up like a picket fence ever'where, had to clear a pathway to the barn door to get the horses out, who were terrible spooked from all the "shootin' " the night before, lol.
Bein' backwoods homesteaders, we already heat with wood & keep a 8gal cannin' kettle of hot water on top of the wood stove, so no prob there...had to haul water from the pond & fill the toilet tank by hand to flush though. We always keep 20 gal-milk jugs of drinkin' water stored back, plus we have springs about 200 yds below the house for emergency drinkin' water. So, we broke out the Coleman stove & lanterns & "camped" in th' house 'till things got back to normal, lol.
