Hi Guys, thought I'd get a quick check-in during lunch, before I get busy with this afternoon's things.
The HD on my desktop crashed last weekend. Some dude slid on the icy-road conditions we had that weekend & hit an electric pole in town, while I had my 'puter powered-up. Just so happens he disrupted the grid that powers the 20 sq. miles or so of country-side where we're located.
When they got the power back on, the rig wouldn't boot. Spent a while here & there amongst all the other things I got going on during the past week checking the rig out ( which is exasperating to me, hate to do things piece-meal...like to stick with a project & see it through before getting involved with another...but life doesn't always cooperate, lol).
This weekend I got access to the 'puter I'm using at present to finish out the diagnostics. It's a laptop & I shouldn't complain, better than nothing, but can't stand the toy-like things. I like a full-sized keyboard & a REAL mouse. My big hands & fingers get all discombobulated. To those of you who have, use & like them, please take no offense. If I was the "Business Suit" type, I could see the advantage, carrying it back & forth to work, business trips, etc. It's just personal preference. But, for the time being, it will suffice.
I have an external cable & hooked my HD up on this laptop...can't access the "C" partition at all of the "crashed" drive so it must be "fried". But I can access the other 4 partitions, which is where where I have all my pix, files & data stored anyway. Only OS & installed programs on the "C" partition & I got all the originals on them. Got to Xfer about 10 Gigs of stuff I want to keep to this laptop before burning to CDs, for permanent backup. Then, I'll have to get another HD on one of my weekly sojourns into town and load an OS before re-installing my progies.
I built this box in '01 from components I acquired here & there, so I've gotten good use out of it and will eventually get it back running. It's AMD Athlon 800 processor is behind times now but still plenty fast for what I do. I was already gathering components to upgrade to a faster box and planning to keep this one as a back-up & for the grand kids to use when they visit.
Chance of rain here this afternoon, so I'd better get some more outside stuff done before it hits.
