Daily light on the daily path.

Devotional by Jonathan Bagster.

September 1

MORNING

The fruit of the Spirit is meekness. Gal. 5:22

The meek ... shall increase their joy in the LORD, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. Isa. 29:19

Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Matt. 18:3, 4

The ornament of a meek and quiet spirit.... is in the sight of God of great price. I Pet. 3:4

Charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up. I Cor. 13:4

Follow after meekness. I Tim. 6:11

Take my yoke upon you and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart. Matt. 11:29

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. Isa. 53:7

Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: who, when he was reviled, reviled not again.... but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously. I Pet. 2:21-23

EVENING

If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. Luke 9:23

By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report. II Cor. 6:8

All that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. II Tim. 3:12

The offence of the cross. Gal. 5:11

If I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ. Gal. 1:10

If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye: but let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters. Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf. I Pet. 4:14-16

Unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake. Phil. 1:29

If one died for all, then were all dead: and that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again. II Cor. 5:14, 15

If we suffer, we shall also reign with him. II Tim. 2:12

MORNING

Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law. Psa. 119:18

Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures. Luke 24:45

It is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. Matt. 13:11

I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight. Matt. 11:25, 26

We have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. I Cor. 2:12

How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand. Psa. 139:17, 18

O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? For of him, and through him, and to him are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen. Rom. 11:33, 34, 36

EVENING

En-hakkore. (Or, The well of him that cried.) Judges 15:19

If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith unto thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. John 4:10

If any man thirst, let hirn come unto me and drink. This spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive. John 7:37, 39

Prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. Mal. 3:10

If ye.... being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? Luke 11:13

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find. Luke 11:9

Because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Gal. 4:6

Ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. Rom. 8:15

He giveth more grace. James 4:6

Grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. II Pet. 3:18

EVENING

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord. Psa. 121:1, 2

As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even for ever. Ps.a 125:2

Unto thee lift I up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens. Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the LORD our God, until that he have mercy upon us. Psa. 123:1, 2

Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice. Psa. 63:7

O our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee. II Chron. 20:12

Mine eyes are ever toward the LORD; for he shall pluck my feet out of the net. Psa. 25:15

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom. Prov. 9:10

We have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. II Cor. 4:7

The communion of the Holy Ghost be with you all. II Cor. 13:14

I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. John 14:16, 17

LORD, I have loved the habitation of thy house, and the place where thine honour dwelleth. Psa. 26:8

MORNING

Let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. James 1:4

Now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: that the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ. I Pet. 1:6, 7

We glory in tribulations: ... knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope. Rom. 5:3, 4

It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD. Lam. 3:26

Ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance. Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward. For ye have need of patience, that after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. Heb. 10:34-36

Our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts. II Thess. 2:16, 17

EVENING

God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ. Rom. 2:16

Judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God. I Cor. 4:5

The Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: because he is the Son of man. John 5:22, 27

The Son of God ... hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire. Rev. 2:18

They say, How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the most High? Psa. 73:11

These things thou hast done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes. Psa. 50:21

There is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed neither hid, that shall not be known. Luke 12:2

Lord, all my desire is before thee; and my groaning is not hid from thee. Psa. 38:9

Justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. Rom. 3:24

EVENING

Death is swallowed up in victory. I Cor. 15:54

Thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. I Cor. 15:57

Forasmuch ... as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; and deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. Heb. 2:14, 15

If we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Rom. 6:8-11

In all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. Rom. 8:37

MORNING

Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time. I Pet. 5:6

Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished. Prov. 16:5

O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand. Be not wroth very sore, O LORD, neither remember iniquity for ever: behold, see, we beseech thee, we are all thy people. Isa. 64:8, 9

Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art the LORD my God. Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth. Jer. 31:18, 19

It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth. Lam. 3:27

Affliction cometh not forth of the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground; yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward. Job 5:6, 7

EVENING

Yea, hath God said? Gen. 3:1

When the tempter came to Jesus, he said, If thou be the Son of God. Matt. 4:3

Jesus said unto him, It is written.... it is written... it is written. Matt. 4:4, 7, 10

Then the devil leaveth him. Matt. 4:11

I may not return with thee. For it was said to me by the word of the LORD, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there. He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him. So he went back with him. The man of God.... was disobedient unto the word of the LORD: therefore the LORD hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the LORD. I Kings 13:16-19, 26

Though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. Gal. 1:8

Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Psa. 119:11

He left not himself without witness. Acts 14:17

Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. Psa. 19:2, 3

When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; what is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? Psa. 8:3, 4

There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory. So also is the resurrection of the dead. I Cor. 15:41, 42

They that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever. Dan. 12:3
