Daily light on the daily path.

Devotional by Jonathan Bagster.

October 1

MORNING

The fruit of the Spirit is temperance. Gal. 5:22

Every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: but I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. I Cor. 9:25-27

Be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit. Eph. 5:18

If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. Matt. 16:24

Let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night. But let us, who are of the day, be sober. I Thess. 5:6

Denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ. Titus 2:12, 13

EVENING

Grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ. Eph. 4:15

First the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear. Mark 4:28

Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ. Eph. 4:13

They measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise. But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth. II Cor. 10:12, 17, 18

The body is of Christ. Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which fie hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, and not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God. Col. 2:17-19

Grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. II Pet. 3:18

MORNING

The Lord shall be thy confidence and shall keep thy foot from being taken. Prov. 3:26

Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee: the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain. Psa. 76:10

The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will. Prov. 21:1

When a man's ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him. Prov. 16:7

I wait for the LORD, my soul cloth wait, and in his word do I hope. My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning. Psa. 130:5, 6

I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. Psa. 34:4

The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them. Deut. 33:27

Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. Jer. 17:7

What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? Rom. 8:31

EVENING

Consolation in Christ, ... comfort of love, ... fellowship of the Spirit. Phil. 2:1

Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down; he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not. Job 14:1, 2

My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever. John 14:16

The Father ... shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever: the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name. John 14:26

Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. II Cor. 1:3, 4

If we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. And so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words. I Thess. 4:14, 17, 18

MORNING

I delight in the law of God after the inward man. Rom. 7:22

O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day. Psa. 119:97

Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart. Jer. 15:16

I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste. Song 2:3

I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food. Job 23:12

I delight to do thy will, O my God: thy law is within my heart. Psa. 40:8

My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. John 4:34

The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Psa. 19:8, 10

Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass. James 1:22, 23

<><><><><><><><><><><><><>

EVENING

The Lord thy God accept thee. II Sam. 24:23

Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old? Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? Micah 6:6-8

We are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags. Isa. 64:6

There is none righteous, no, not one. For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood. To declare ... at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. Rom. 3:10, 23-26

Accepted in the Beloved. Eph. 1:6

Ye are complete in him. Col. 2:10

Having ... these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. II Cor. 7:1

EVENING

The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. John 13:16, 17

There was ... a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. But ye shall not be so:but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth. Luke 2:24-27

Even the Son of man be ministered unto, but to give his life a ransom for many. Matt. 20:28

Jesus riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. John 13:3-5

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Isa. 26:3

What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. Ps.a 56:3

In the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock. And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy: I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD. Psa. 27:5, 6

The God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered awhile, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. I Pet. 5:10, 11

<><><><><><><><><><><><><>

EVENING

The Lord hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all. Psa. 103:19

The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the LORD. Prov. 16:33

Shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it? Amos 3:6

I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me: that they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the LORD, and there is none else. I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things. Isa. 45:5-7

He doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou? Dan. 4:35

MORNING

A man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. Luke 12:15

A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked. Psa. 37:16

Better is little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and trouble therewith. Prov. 15:16

Godliness with contentment is great gain. Having food and raiment let us be therewith content. I Tim. 6:6-8

Give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain. Prov. 30:8, 9

Give us this day our daily bread. Matt. 6:11

Take no thought for vour life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Matt. 6:25

When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing. Luke 22:35

Let your conversation be without covetousness: and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. Heb. 13:5

<><><><><><><><><><><><><>

EVENING

It is the spirit that quickeneth. John 6:63

The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. I Cor. 15:45

That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. John 3:6

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost. Titus 3:5

If any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. Rom. 8:9-11

I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God. Gal. 2:20

Reckon ye ... yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Rom. 6:11

EVENING

When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the Lord will hear them. Isa. 41:17

There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? Psa. 4:6

MORNING

Lo, I am with you always even unto the end of the world. Matt. 28:20

If two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. Mark 18:19, 20

He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. John 14:21

Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? ... If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. John 14:22, 23

Unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen. Jude 24, 25

EVENING

The end of all things is at hand. I Pet. 4:7

I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. Rev. 20:11

The heavens and the earth, which are now... are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment. II Pet. 3:7

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Psa. 46:1-3

Ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled. Matt. 24:6

We have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. II Cor. 5:1

We ... look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless. II Pet. 3:13, 14

MORNING

The Lord reigneth. Psa. 99:1

Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar yet can they not pass over it? Jer. 5:22

Promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another. Psa. 75:6, 7

Ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled. Matt. 24:6

If God be for us, who can be against us? Rom. 8:31

EVENING

Take heed to your spirit. Mal. 2:15

Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us. And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us. Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? But he ... rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. Luke 9:49, 50, 54, 55

Eldad and Medad do prophesy in the camp. And Joshua the son of Nun ... answered and said, My lord Moses, forbid them. And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? would God that all the LORD'S people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit upon them! Num. 11:27-29

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance. Gal. 5:22, 23

And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another. Gal. 5:24-26

Himself took our infirmities and bare our sicknesses. Matt. 8:17

Then shall the priest command to take for him that is to be cleansed two birds alive and clean, and cedar wood, and scarlet, and hyssop: and the priest shall command that one of the birds be killed in an earthen vessel over running water: as for the living bird, he shall take it, and the cedar wood, and the scarlet, and the hyssop, and shall dip them and the living bird in the blood of the bird that was killed over the running water: and he shall sprinkle upon him that is to be cleansed from the leprosy seven times, and shall pronounce him clean, and shall let the living bird loose into the open field. Lev. 14:4-7

Behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. Luke 5:12

And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean. And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed. Mark 1:41, 42

EVENING

He whom thou blessest is blessed. Num. 22:6

Matt. 5:3-12

Blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it. Luke 11:28

Daily light for the daily path

Compiled by Jonathan Bagster.

October 28

MORNING

He saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him. Isa. 59:16

Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire: mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required. Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me, I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart. Psa. 40:6-8

I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. John 10:17, 18

There is no God else beside me: a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me. Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else. Isa. 45:21, 22

There is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Acts 4:12

Ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich. II cor. 8:9

EVENING

The Enemy. Luke 10:19

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour. I Pet. 5:8

Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7

Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. Eph. 6:11-16

Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me. Micah. 7:8

I count all things but loss, for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, and be found in him, not having mine own righteousness which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith. Phil. 3:8, 9

In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears. I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. Psa. 34:1-4, 8

MORNING

Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts. Zech. 4:6

Who hath directed the Spirit of the LORD, or being his counsellor bath taught him? Isa. 40:13

God bath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God bath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; and base things of the world, and things which are despised, bath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: that no flesh should glory in his presence. I Cor. 1:27-29

The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. John 3:8

Born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. John 1:13

My Spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not. Hag. 2:5

The battle is not your's, but God's. II Chron. 20:15

The LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD'S. I Sam. 17:47

EVENING

Do as thou hast said. II Sam. 7:25

Stablish thy word unto thy servant, who is devoted to thy fear. So shall I have wherewith to answer him that reproacheth me: for I trust in thy word. Remember the word unto thy servant, upon which thou hast caused me to hope. Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage. The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver. For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven. Thy faithfulness is unto all generations. Psa. 119:38, 42, 49, 54, 72, 89, 90

God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath; that by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus. Heb. 6:17-26

Exceeding great and precious promises. II Pet. 1:4
