Most of you know that June Webb is one of my all time favorite female vocalists from the fifties and sixties. I wish I had more from her, but sure thankful for what I do have!! I've been honored to contact June through her daughter, Lisa. She's sending me some more songs of June and June has agreed to sign Josh's book. According to Lisa, her mother can still belt out a tune!

June Webb was born September 22, 1934. She was an up-and-coming Opry Star by the early fifties, being the lead vocalist on the Roy Acuff Show. In September 1952, the 17 year old singer married musician Buddy Killen, who went on to a successful career as a publisher in Nashville. In 1958 June walked away from the business, and Roy's show (replaced by Melba Montgomery) never to be heard from again. At the time June's solo career was on the upswing. She began her career with Shirley, her younger sister, as the Webb Sisters act that was part of Hank Williams' road show. In fact, the Webb Sisters were to perform on the Charleston Show on New Year's Eve in 1952 that Hank didn't show for due to weather and the Canton Show the night Hank died, January 1, 1953. Subsequent to that June became one of the gals sitting on a bale of hay on the Grand Ole Opry show. One of her better known songs, Looking Glass, provided an early glimpse of how well June could deliver a song ?her transition between notes and verses is outstanding. As good as Looking Glass is, June's 1958 version of Hank Williams' A Mansion On The Hill is outstanding! She puts heart and soul into the song and puts her own stamp on it. Had Hank not recorded it first, it surely would've been a charter for June. Some of the great songs June recorded include: A Mansion On The Hill, Looking Glass, Born To Be Lonely , You Take The Table I'll Take The Chairs, and a few others.
June apparently simply walked away from what could possibly have been a career as a top country star to marry an Airforce officer. As mentioned earlier, when June walked away in 1958 from the Roy Acuff Show in walked Melba Montgomery ... a topnotch great country singer/songwriter in her own right, mostly Honky Tonk. Today, June resides in Hawaii. Her retirement has been permanent, though she still knows how to belt out a song and pick her guitar.
