Overcoming Temptation
Scripture Focus: 1 Corinthians 10:12-22 “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. . . . He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. . . . He will also provide a way out?(1 Corinthians 10:13).
Joseph was a slave in Potiphar’s household. Unfortunately for him, Potiphar’s wife set her sights on seducing him. When she was alone in the house with Joseph she made her move. He was aghast at what his master’s wife suggested and instead of falling to sin, he fled. His infuriated would-be seducer, in an act of revenge, cried rape. Joseph was tried, convicted, and sent to prison (see Genesis 39).
How much easier it would have been for Joseph to succumb to the temptation. She was a lovely, desirable woman who spent hours alone. But Joseph would not compromise his relationship with God for a moment of pleasure. He saw an escape and he ran.
God never promised that the way of escape wouldn’t cause us grief, but He did say when temptation came, He would provide a way of escape. Sure, Joseph suffered grave consequences, but the long term benefits were greater than he could ever have imagined (see Genesis 41).
Insight: We have the option to flee temptation right up to the very moment we participate in the sin. The choice lies solely in our hands.
