</STYLE> One of America's most notorious child murder cases was finally solved yesterday after a 27-year saga that led to the dead boy's father becoming the nation's leading anti-crime crusader. John Walsh, host of the television show America's Most Wanted, wept as police in Florida announced that his six-year-old son Adam was killed by Ottis Toole, a cannibalistic drifter who died of liver failure in 1996 while serving life sentences for seven other murders. “For 27 years we have been asking: ‘Who could take a six-year-old boy and murder him and decapitate him? Who?' Now we know who,?Mr Walsh said at a press conference in Hollywood, Florida. “The not knowing has been a torture but that journey's over ... Today is a wonderful day. We can end this chapter of our lives.? Since the boy's disappearance during a shopping trip with his mother, Revé, in 1981, and the discovery two weeks later of his severed head in a canal 125 miles away, Mr Walsh and his wife have been high-profile advocates for victims' rights and spurred new legislation to change the way in which missing children's cases are handled. They founded the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), launched a “Code Adam?programme for helping children lost in department stores and helped to get the faces of thousands of missing children on to milk cartons and shopping bags. I actually began to start a thread on this yesterday after seeing John Walsh on the Today Show... then I got a phone call and had to run out and forgot to come back to it. What a touching interview it was. I'm so so glad John Walsh and his family finally get the "justice" and peace they craved, by a final acknowledgement... "Case Closed". They waited far too long for it. I'm also glad they received a sincere apology for the botched investigation, though in my mind, no apology would ever be sufficient. The whole family handled themselves with remarkable grace, often getting choked up, but still offering encouragement to those whose loved ones are still missing or their murders unsolved. John and Rivee' Walsh have done such remarkable work and because of their tragedy, so many other people have had happy endings. There's a place in heaven reserved for those people, right next to their little boy. I think John Walsh is a hero. He has worked tirelessly to apprehend criminals and to get laws passed that makes the disappearance of a child top priority. I've heard "Code Adam" announced in many stores, and everytime I hear it, it always reminds me of little Adam Walsh. If this simple proclamation was all it took to give them peace, I wish it had come years ago. If ever a child didn't die in vain, it was Adam Walsh. |

John Walsh certainly is someone to look up to. I hope he and his family have finally found the peace theyve been looking for all this time... |

I remember this whole tragedy in real time as the kidnapping occurred less than 100 miles from my home town, and they found his head in a canal just north of my home of Ft. Pierce, FL. I was 15 at the time so it really didn't have the impact that it would have had I been older with kids of my own. I remember also from 13 years ago when I was a Recruiter for the Army, I was stationed in Hollywood, FL and I drove past the mall where he was obducted on a daily basis, it was a Sears when he was taken but at the time had been closed and converted to a fashion mall of some sort. It was during this timeframe, 95-98, that Toole died in prison and the events were replayed over and over for about a week. I was glad to see that they finally closed the case and it pointed to the person that pretty much everyone in the state "knew" to be responsible; while it will never bring Adam back, this closure may help John and Reve gain a certain level of relief. |
