Becca,

I'm so sorry about your grandpa.  It's no coincidence, though, that you saw him before he passed away...that happens so often.  Without really knowing it, it was your goodbye to him.  Though I know how much it hurts to lose him, among the other really sweet memories of him, you will remember being there at that time, and you will always be glad you did. 

 

I absolutely love being with my grandmother.  I know that since Mom died, she's afraid she won't see us kids much anymore since we all live so far away.  All of us have made a promise (and we promised my mother) that we would look after Grandma and keep in touch, and visit as often as possible. 

 

Your grandfather is not sick anymore, and that's a real blessing.  Sometimes we hurt so much when we lose somebody, that we forget--- they might have been ready to go, and we selfishly want to hang on to them. 

 

I know your grandpa is in Heaven riding around on a really sweet riding lawnmower!

 

 

Becca  I'm very sorry to hear about your grandfather, but those memories you have of him are very special... and your post was touching.  I hope 2009 is a better year for you and your family!

thoughts and prayers

 I decided that I would not take precious days that Bill was able to spend with his kids in Ohio away from him so I didn't make it to the funeral.  Part of me feels like shit for missing my grandpa's funeral but deep down, I know that I was there when he really needed me.  He's with my grandma and my mom now and that's exactly where he's wanted to be for a long time.  During our drive home on Thursday, we stopped in West Virginia and picked up a nice slab of slate from the side of a mountain that I am having engraved with "West Virginia" to place near them.  Both my grandparents are from West Virginia and now they'll have a small piece of it near them always.
