Animal rights groups are furious after a Texas town gave its authories the right to bear arms against wild dogs.

Dog rummaging through rubbish

Residents don't want aggressive dogs - or scenes like this one in Chile

The controversial policy is the latest attempt to curb a growing population of feral dogs that are roaming the streets.

Since last week, authorities have been allowed to use shotguns to kill the 50 to 100 aggressive dogs running loose in the rural northern town of Ferris.

City manager David Chavez said the town had become a dumping ground for the unwanted pets.

The released animals breed, form packs and scavenge for food.

Police chief Frank Mooney says the town has tried other methods to protect its 2,300 residents with little success.

But animal rights advocates say the problem could be solved in better ways.

They argue the animals could be trapped, or punishment meted out on those who dump the dogs.

Ferris is about 20 miles south of Dallas in the Lone Star state.

Unfortunately, and sadly... I'm going to agree with the city's decision.  That will probably sound surprising to a few of you, coming from ME...the greatest dog and animal lover there is and believe me, I HATE that it has to be a consideration, but in the end, it might be the kindest thing of all to do.  Probably so many of these dogs are facing starvation anyway, which...definitely would tend to make them more aggressive and dangerous, not to mentioned diseased.  It's such a sad sad case.

A better solution would definitely be to trap and spay or neuter the dogs and TRY to find homes for them, but in a small town they may not have the funds or volunteers to do such a thing.  Unfortunately, unlike most wildlife, you can't simply trap and relocate the dogs to another area.  Its unlikely they would EVER survive in the rugged wilderness like a raccoon or a wildcat, so their suffering would be even greater than a quick gunshot wound.  In the small town they're in, they're reliant on garbage and occasional handouts.  I can certainly understand how they would be a threat to the community, especially the kids.

So all these animal activists groups who are bitching and protesting... shame on them.  If they really cared that much, they'd get their activist asses down there and assist in finding a solution instead of criticizing what is probably one of the kinder solutions as opposed to letting the dogs starve to death.

As MUCH as I love dogs and all animals, even I recognize that they ARE animals... and you can not jeopardize a public by having dangerous animals run amok.

I might add that generally I can't stand these animal activist groups anyway.  PETA is right up there with the right-to-lifers that are equally as obnoxious. LOL... hell, even the Craigslist fanatics who constantly flag pet ads for one stupid reason or another get on my nerves to the "nth" degree.  They are complete nuisances in soooo many cases.

The Animal control people here have been advocating shooting dogs for years here. Coyotes and Bobcats as well. They come and do it themselves too. I am surprised they can enforce firearm discharging laws for areas like mine and yet allow the discharging of a firearm under certain circumstances. I personally feel like it is better to set out the traps and then euthanize the animals if necessary but this problem has gotten so big, it has overwhelmed the system.

Right now, as I type this, I am looking out my front window at a Dog that my neighbor has chained up in the yard. A beautiful English Bulldog. No food No water and No shelter. He has left town for the holiday. It is assholes like these that have helped make this problem so huge. I'd like to kick him in the nuts.

Why put the dogs through the trauma of being trapped (sometimes for hours or days), only to be held in a facility, until they're killed anyway.  Its still a death sentence and feral animals can quickly become trap shy once they see a few others getting caught.  Of course, they should also prosecute anyone caught dumping the dogs, but if it were that easy, there probably wouldn't be a problem in the first place.

Another important key here is that they haven't just created an open season on dogs.  They've only given the right to "authorities" which means its more likely to be a clean kill and just as quick as a lethal injection.  I would object to allowing any yahoo with a gun to start taking pot shots at stray dogs.

We were told by the officer the last time he was down here that we should just shoot the animals that are in question. I could very easily do that but.....

Two of these dogs are owned (for lack of a better word) by the crowd and I do mean CROWD down the street. (From you guessed it (South of the Border). Now I could very easily pull out my .22 and take care of this but then what? Shoot the pissed off neighbors too?

One thing that would give me more pleasure, perhaps the greatest of all pleasures, is for irresponsible pet owners to GET A CLUE!!!!

The point I was trying to make was that no matter how laws are structured to help the Animal Control problem, nothing will stop it until people start acting like they actually CARE about the animals they call "Pets"........You know I would never shoot anything!!! Two legged or four.
