I am curious after weeks of reading the board ...does anyone have anything nice to say about what we do ? yeah I get the numbers issue , the ppl who voted yes are evil and the company is mismanaged drastically . I suspect managers heads are on the block next ...network is down to bare bones and consumer may take the hit next . I get we owe money and pay a CEO 1.5 million vs 14 million a couple years ago. I get my numbers are contingent on what techs do in the field and consumer mess ups are what keep me employed. But out of all this is there not some positive thing that anyone can say ? Personally I love my job ...most of the time but I hate the politics and micro management . just curious ....

Why would the union and company not work together?  That is the problem with people like you 45auto...and what makes this company/union even worse.

oh and another thing why is it you just want everyone to quit? is that the only way that you feel that you will get some seniorty? your nice boss wont be able to save your job if you have no seniorty when there is another lay off.

We all have our necks in the ringer, those who do care about this industry but are forced to do LAZY, crappy work but I have been on F.W.W. for 6 or months and went out cause of the BULL.... But now I look at it this way The company is not going to change. They could care less if  you or I work here! They will go bankrupt for there stupidity. We will all be Government employees or contractors . The Union will still be filling grievences, and maybe just maybe I can go to work and put 8 hours of work and feel good about it , wouldnt have my job threatened . I think we should all screw the numbers up so bad to our advantage they will be forced to stop.

too true&if you don't submit to the company's nazi tactics, you can't make their #'s&then if they ask you why you can't consistently make the same #'s every day&you tell them &show them that by their own time tables it is physically impossible to :dpo, call sub, drive to house, drive to sac, term, splice, rpr pr,rplc asw, retro fit nid-sni,move it outside, run grnd, final test line, offer sub more qwest services, reff sale to" you can ".close job......... all in 54 min or less...............maybe if you get a straight feed inside term basic ord in a new apt or office bldg that only req a tag@dmrc term &the cust is on site waiting for you with acc to the term &your dt is perfect;wait enough of the bedtime story,i wouldn't want to put ratgirl to sleep.

People (and rat lovers),

Qwest is a modern marvel if you ask me. To live under the constant ineptitude and managerial floundering and then see Qwest make approximately $50 million per month is staggering. One can only imagine how profitable Qwest COULD be if they would remove their head from their rear and run the company correctly.

It's funny reading this thread because both sides have valid points. The union is archaic and outdated. They defend useless employees and don't bargain fiercely for the employees. And they use scare tactics and blah blah blah.

The company, on the other hand, puts bread on our tables and roofs over our heads and yet they are the "bad guys." What? Are you kidding me? Most of us DON'T LEAVE because we can't find better pay ANYWHERE ELSE! And yet we complain.

So I propose the following solution: Help Qwest get streamlined and more profitable so the CEO's can take home even more money and then perhaps they'll be so busy spending it so they won't micro-manage US -- OR -- go work at Wal Mart. Or UPS. Or as a teacher. Or any of the other thousands of crap jobs that are out there. At least you won't have to complain about Qwest's ineptitude and "abuse" any longer! You'll be poor but that's a different story.

cwa_rulz!

Dear 'Rats',
With regards to defending 'lazy techs, liars and cheats'... as a steward, as a union we are obligated to represent all our members, they are innocent until proven guilty and then we make sure the punishment fits the crime.  With regards to being lazy, it could be that they don't have the training, that they get all the garbage jobs having to clean up records, pull out dead jumpers, get stuck in traffic... so what one person terms lazy could be another person's stuck in traffic or such, lying... again we need to know all the facts and not the urban myths that circulate.  I'm not saying there aren't a very few folks out there who are wrong... but so many members are misjudged, falsely accused that we shouldn't jump to conclusions that if the mgr says they did the deed, that they sure enough did it.  Very few people file grievances, but those who do deserve and pay for the assistance they get.  More grievances should be filed but far too many of our members think the grievances file themselves and that they shouldn't have to do anything.  Wrong.

Can the union and the company work together to improve processes, sure they can.  Will they?  I haven't seen any of the labor-mgt improvement teams for over 10 years.  When U S West, under Sol, took over things started sliding down the slippery slope.  With Qwest, Joe and Co. brought a whole new twist to things.  Their word no longer meant a thing.  So the credibility gap has grown to the size of the Grand Canyon.

When contract negotiations, measurement programs like QJD, attendance policies, mobilization restrictions among other things are introduced or become part of our daily lives, life gets really messy and we need to stand united, that's what the union is.

Pnb, were you on one of them Union/Management Quality Teams?  One of the "former" change agents?
Your words are starting to look very familiar, especially the fact that Sol, ended that era.................I was one too.

Hi DSMscreener1,

I have one very good thing to say about what we do - I am not having to do it anymore!!!

Sorry - just couldn't pass that one up...I miss all you guys a bunch but do not miss working at Qwest one bit. It has been about a week and a half that I have been out of there and I am starting to feel better, sleep better and do not wish every day was Friday anymore.

Hope all is going well for you - tell the team hi for me.

Take care!

ditto

I got out while the gettin was good.

they gave me a choice to travel further to work(in effect take a pay cut by having to travel ) or leave in provisions in the contract and I left...

I think that this company is standing in front of the financial tidal wave and doesn't have the brains to figure it out.......

it would be so easy for a group to buy their debt from the banks and throw  Anschutz, Mueller and his managers and CWA to the curb.

force Qwest into bankruptcy fires the mangement and the creditors appoint a trustee
and declare CWA's contract void

is that a bitter cup of coffee or what

b-t-w  rats make good  target practice

No I wasn't a change agent. I have friends who were.  I just remember the times where we did talk, try to work things out for the betterment of all.  Everything wasn't so advesarial.  But that was a time when managers actually came up thru the ranks, very few hired right out of college with book smarts, many mgrs still had common sense and realized we were all on the same team, just different positions. Their success was tied to ours. I can remember when a mgr crossed the line with an employee and others would slow down and effect his results, getting him in trouble because of his 'attitude towards his crew'.   But that was then and this is now.  And you can see the difference between those who had that experience with 'the phone company' and those 'new kids on the block' who don't have any idea of what we're talking about.  The customer service, the pride in our jobs, how we did what was necessary to provide service just because we were the telephone guy (or gal). Very few people were 'forced' to work the OT. Bad weather or a disaster, little ol' lady needing her dial tone, we worked it, we were the phone company.  If someone had a family need or commitment, others stepped up to cover for one another.  Don't get me wrong, seniority got you the job assignments, the vacation, the hours of work, training opportunities... but we all knew that we would get our chance eventually.  But we all put service first. That dedication used to be rewarded, now we're chastised for it.  Want to know what happened to customer loyalty, it went out the window with QJD.   Sol started the ball rolling, then came Joe.  Neither one has done well since they took our money and ran.

I sincerely hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving.  There were some really great times at the phone company.  There were and still are some really great people working there.  Some folks end up being your friends for life.  And if you were in a pinch, they'd be there to help in a heart beat.  These are some of the people to be thankful for tomorrow and every day.
