You Are Literally Eating Your Own Words
"You will have to live with the consequences of everything you say." - New International Bible Commentary
"A man must for good or evil take the consequences of his words, as well as his deeds." - Barnes' Notes
"Our own words frequently shape our good or evil fortune in life." - Adam Clarke Commentary
"We are rewarded or punished for what we say and do." - Contemporary English Version
"Your reward depends on what you say and what you do; you will get what you deserve." - Good News Bible
"We ought to take as great care about the words we speak as we do about the fruit of our trees or the increase of the earth, which we are to eat; for, according as they are wholesome or unwholesome, so will the pleasure or pain be wherewith we shall be filled." - Bishop Patrick - taken from the The Matthew Henry Commentary
"A man with a fruit-bringing mouth, himself enjoys also the blessing of his fruit-producing speech." - Keil & Delitzsch Commentary On The Old Testament
There is so much talk about "sowing your seed" and "reaping a harvest" amongst the Christian circles today. It is in generally used in relation to giving the tithe or an offering to the work of the Lord.
However, are you just as aware that every moment of the day you are sowing seeds for a harvest that could bring beneficial or detrimental consequences into your life?
The particular harvest that we refer to pertains to the words that you speak. According to what you sow with your lips, such will be the harvest that follows afterwards.
Whether you realize it or not - your mouth is a fruit-bearing mouth and it is going to bring you pleasure or it will bring you pain - depending on the words that come forth.
There are three Scriptures in the Book of Proverbs which speak of "the fruit of your mouth." They are as follows -
Proverbs 12:14 says - "A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth..."
Proverbs 13:2 says - "A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth..."
Proverbs 18:20 adds - "A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth..."
Notice that all three verses mentioned the expression - "the fruit of his mouth..." What starts at the heart and proceeds forth from your lips produces a mighty harvest that can affect your life for good or for evil. Your harvest is pictured as "fruit."
Imagine yourself as a farmer. With your thoughts as the "seed," your mouth then brings forth the final result - the "fruit" in your words. These words are the "fruit," product, produce, result, or "increase" of your lips. Hence, well-spoken words bring forth the "fruit" of satisfaction....advantage...good things...as well as innumerable blessings, while evil words bring forth the "fruit" of misery...dissatisfaction... misfortune...and innumerable curses upon your life.
Proverbs 12:14 says - "A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth..." In other words, he will reap the most blessing - richly receive, "eat," and enjoy the good his words deserve. He will enjoy the bountiful "fruit of his mouth." His words will turn to a good account. He will derive comfort and inward pleasure from them.
Proverbs 13:2 says - "A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth..." Here we see how the words of a man's mouth actually become his own food. He"eats" good...enjoys good...or obtains good "by the fruit of his mouth." He reaps the results of the good words he speaks.
Proverbs 18:20-21 adds - "A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled. Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof." A man's words are the "fruit of his mouth" or "the increase of his lips." He - in turn - "eats" or benefits from them. His "belly" or conscience "shall be satisfied" or "shall be filled" accordingly with either "death" or "life" - evil or good - harm or help.
In closing, we reiterate the quote from the Matthew Henry Commentary - "We ought to take as great care about the words we speak as we do about the fruit of our trees or the increase of the earth, which we are to eat; for, according as they are wholesome or unwholesome, so will the pleasure or pain be wherewith we shall be filled."
No one would dare to eat rotten fruit from a fruit tree - yet every day do you settle for rotten fruit from your own mouth?
Based on the saying - You are what you eat - and knowing that we are filled with "the fruit of our own mouths" - just what kind of Christian are you? Are you one that is healthy - eating the good - kind, loving, edifying, encouraging, and truthful words - or one that is sickly - eating a steady diet of evil - critical, judgmental, negative, bitter, proud, fearful, unbelieving, carnal, or lying words?
Never forget - your mouth is a "fruit-bringing mouth" and your speech is a "fruit-producing speech." And you "eat" the very words that come out of your own mouth.
May God Bless His Word.
