Vivit - Jesus Lives!
"When Luther was in his worst troubles a friend came in to see him, and he noticed that he had written upon the wall in big letters the word "Vivit." He inquired of Luther what he meant by "vivit"? Luther answered, "Jesus lives; and if he did not live I would not care to live an hour." Yes, our life is bound up with that of Jesus. We are not called upon to live of ourselves, that would be death; but we have life and all things in union with Him." - Charles Spurgeon
"As surely as I shall rise from the dead, so shall ye. My resurrection shall be the proof and pledge of yours. And because I live a life of intercession for you at the right hand of God, ye shall live a life of grace and peace here, and a life of glory hereafter." - Adam Clarke
"The life of the Christian is bound up in the life of Christ; as sure and as long as He lives, those that by faith are united to Him shall live also; they shall live spiritually, a divine life in communion with God. This life is hid with Christ; if the head and root live, the members and branches live also." - Matthew Henry
In John 14:19, the Lord Jesus made this remarkable declaration - "...because I live, ye shall live also."
He spoke these words right before His death and in anticipation of His resurrection. Because of His resurrection, He would continue to live and be a source of power and defense for every believer in Him. Because they were united to Him by the spirit, they would have the guarantee of this abiding life. On earth, they would live the life of faith and love and then in the hereafter, the life of glory would await them.
This resurrection life - maintained by Christ Himself - would give them power over all spiritual foes...overturn all the hopes of the enemy...deliver them from the hands of every enemy... and bring them through every temptation and trial victoriously.
This resurrection life would take possession of these followers - giving them an immeasurable energy that they never dreamed possible. It would push them to a new and higher life - a life lived on the highest plane of excellence. The actual mind and nature of the Risen Lord would be poured into their hearts, minds, and character - transforming them into a holy and grace-filled people.
This everlasting life - this life of liberty and glory - which springs out of Christ would be fed and maintained by Him through close communion.
In John 10:10, the Lord Jesus referred to it as the "abundant life." It is communicated in rich and unfailing exuberance. It entails having a superabundance of spiritual blessings as well as things needful in this life - making life eminently blessed through the fullness of joy, glory, and happiness.
The best way to describe it is a life that is something more...something better...a life with advantage...and all that is good.
It is no wonder that Luther - in a time of great temptation - was able to say - "Vivit! Jesus lives!" What was sustaining Him was not his own life, but the life of the Resurrected Lord.
Christian, be encouraged today! No matter what you are facing - just remember - because of the Resurrection, you have an abundant life inside of you that will push you through onto victory! It promises you a life of grace and peace in this life and of glory in the next.
Because you are abiding in the Resurrected One, your life is something more...something better...a life with an advantage...and all that is good.
Start living your life anew this day. Don't let the devil steal your song or your dance.
Your life is bound up with that of Jesus. Because He overcame, you will, too!
Vivit! Jesus lives!
May God Bless His Word.
