What Kind Of Clothes Are Covering Your Spiritual Nakedness?
"It is not unusual in the Scriptures, as well as in other writings, to compare the virtues with articles of apparel; as that with which we are clothed, or in which we are seen by others." - Barnes' Notes
This is a test - a Self Test, if you will.
Let's see if you are fully clothed as a Christian and just what impression others are receiving from your spiritual attire or the lack of it.
Are you wearing the following?
1. Strength & Honor
Proverbs 31:25 - "Strength and honor are her clothing..."
This woman enjoys a firmness, constancy, and strength of mind. She gets it from her Master - the Lord Jesus Christ. Resultantly, she is able to bear up under many hardships and disappointments...do all things required of her...withstand every enemy...and persevere in well-doing.
2. Righteousness
Job 29:14 - "I put on righteousness, and it clothed me:
Psalm 132:9 - "Let Thy priests be clothed with righteousness..."
Isaiah 61:10 - "...He hath covered me with the robe of righteousness..."
This individual is distinguished or best known for his "righteousness." He has as his covering or adornment the fear of the Lord. His righteousness is apparent to all. He displays a holy character - dignified with goodness. At all times and in every place, he "wears" the habits of holiness toward God and goodness towards all men. His righteousness is as a loose mantle which covers his nakedness and all his sins. It is the outer garment used for protection and for distinction.
3. Justice
Job 29:14 - "I put on...my judgment was as a robe and a diadem."
Job's "judgment" or justice was compared to a full-flowing outer mantle or a magnificent turban. It constituted the most elegant part of his attire. His strict justice was that for which he was best known - that which distinguished him from others. As a magistrate, he continually displayed a steady justice. Just as the people saw him garbed in his "robe" and "diadem," even so did they see him follow settled principles of justice in his office as a magistrate.
4. Salvation
Psalm 132:16 - "I will also clothe her priests with salvation..."
Isaiah 61:10 - "...clothed me with the garments of salvation..."
"Salvation" as a piece of clothing entails all the saving graces and blessings of this life and that which is to come...redemption from all sin through the Blood of Jesus...and the fullness or completion of salvation from sin, the law, wrath, damnation, death, hell, and every enemy. It also includes becoming an instrument to be used for the salvation of others.
5. The Lord Jesus Christ
Romans 13:14 - "But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ..."
"To put on another person" was a Greek phrase which signified to assume the interests of another...mimic them in spirit, words, and actions... closely follow them in all of their views...and walk as they walked.
"To put on the Lord Jesus Christ" was a strong and beautiful expression which simply meant to put on all of His graces. It included imitating His example and morals...accepting Him as one's teacher, guide, and pattern...obeying His precepts...having His mind...and becoming like Him in all aspects of life.
6. The New Man
Ephesians 4:24 - "And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness."
"The new man" is the new, different, and changed nature - as opposed to the old, sinful one. It is the image of God - His likeness traced upon the soul of man. It consists of new feelings, principles, practices, and desires. It enables a man to live a "new life" - a life of righteousness and holiness. Without it, no man can claim to be a Christian.
7. Good Works
1 Timothy 2:9-10 - "In like manner also, that women adorn themselves...with...(which becometh women professing godliness) with good works."
Anyone "professing godliness' will have "good works" to show. These include kind, helpful deeds. The Lord Jesus went about doing good(Acts 10:38), and so will His disciples.
8. Humility
1 Peter 5:5 - "...be clothed with humility..."
"Humility" is a slave dress. It refers to the long white apron commonly worn by slaves, servants, girls, or shepherds. It was a garment fastened with strings, knots, or bows. It signified that someone was ready to serve.
Those who are "clothed with humility" think and speak the best of others and the worst of themselves...are content with the lowest place... do not aspire for things too high for themselves...and ascribe all that they have and are to the grace and goodness of God.
What kind of clothes are covering your spiritual nakedness?
For starters, are you clothed with "strength and honor"..."righteousness"..."justice"..."salvation"..."the Lord Jesus Christ"..."the New Man"... "Good Works"...and "Humility"?
When people first meet you, are these the virtues that they see exemplified in your life?
If not, then you are naked.
Doesn't that make you feel ashamed?
May God Bless His Word.
