Why do we pray
Bobby and his little sister, Mary and his mother and John from down -the -street had just finished making toffee. They were sitting in the garden waiting for it to be ready to pull.
All of a sudden Bobby asked "Do we have to say our prayers, Mother?"
His Mother looked surprised. Then she smiled "Whatever made you think of a question like that while we were making sweets, Bobby ?"
" I just remembered, John and I were talking about it yesterday. Do we mother? Do we have too?"
"No Bobby, we do not have to, but we need to pray."
"Will God be angry with us if we don't ?" John asked
"I think not John, But he wants us to talk to him."
"Does God really like it ,Mother? Whe we say our prayers I mean ?"
" I am sure he does Bobby, You see God loves us ."
"Well I think he would get tired of hearing the same everyday," John said "I get tired of saying it."
"Do you think there is only one prayer,John? There are as many prayers as people want to make.Little children like Mary can make prayers,and bigger children like you and Bobby can make prayers and grown up people can make prayers too."
John looked as if he did not understand."Really? Can we make our own prayers ?"
"Yes we can, Prayers that wise and good people have made often help us to say what we want to say to God. And so we learn them and use them, but when we want to we may make our very own prayers in our very own words. The words may not be so beautiful as those in the old prayers are, but ours may be good prayers just the same.
"I'd like to make some new prayers" John said
"So would I" Bobby agreed "Will you help us mother? Can we make a book of prayers just for ourselves?"
Mother said she thought that was a fine plan, and so Bobby and John and Mary and some of the other children in the street made a book of prayers.
They drew a cover for the book. Some of the prayers they put into their book were old, old prayers that people had prayed for years and years. Some of them were prayers other people had made. Some of them were prayers that they made themselves.
You could make a book of prayers too
with pictures you could draw
and put a cover on it .
