Solution Recall
Advanced Medical Optics has voluntarily recalled 2.9 million units of Complete MoisturePlus multipurpose contact lens care solution that may be contaminated with bacteria. The eye care products maker said the recall was due to a production line issue at its manufacturing plant in China and has temporarily ceased all manufacturing there to clean and sanitize the plant. Contact lens wearers should stop using the recalled products immediately. [INTERNATIONAL HERALD TRIBUNE]

The Return of Silicone
After 14 years, the US Food and Drug Administration have lifted a ban on silicone breast implants. The approval came with conditions and warnings that emphasized implants are subject to breakdown within the body and surgery itself can cause complications. The marketing of silicone gel filled breast implants made by two companies for breast reconstruction in women of all ages and breast augmentation in women ages 22 and older has officially been approved. Factors of Factor VII
Despite the fact that Recombinant Activated Factor VII has been linked to deadly blood clots in the lungs, hearts and brains of patients, American military doctors in Iraq have tested the blood coagulating drug on hundreds of wounded soldiers. Factor VII is approved for treating rare forms of hemophilia and the FDA noted that supplying patients with normal blood could cause heart attacks and strokes. [BALTIMORE SUN]

Preventable Infections
According to recent studies, infections contracted while in hospitals arise mainly from poor hygiene during procedures. Hospital acquired infections lead to 90,000 deaths annually in the US and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention wants medical centers to do more to curb these infections. Duration of the surgery and the number of people coming in and out of a surgical room increased risk of infection. [WASHINGTON POST]

40 Million Infected
According to the United Nations, HIV infections are on the rise in all regions of the world. Nearly 40 million adults and children are infected with the disease and last year, over 2.9 million people died of AIDS. The spread of the disease was most noticeable in East Asia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia and has been tied to increased drug use and unsafe sex. [ALL HEADLINE NEWS]

Botched Botox
Doctors have issued a warning about the dangers of using excessively high doses of the toxin Botox in cosmetic treatments. Patients and physicians must be aware of the hazards associated with illegitimate use of unlicensed Botulinum toxin products as they may result in respiratory failure and even death. Experts note indiscriminate use of Botox can be fatal and patients should only go for treatment with registered doctors. [BBC NEWS]

Single Schizophrenia
It has been a long held assumption that schizophrenia and psychosis are purely genetic. But now, researchers from London's Institute of Psychiatry suggest people from broken homes may be more prone to psychotic illnesses. The study found that psychotic illnesses may be linked to social adversity as the risks increased by 2.5 times after a child's parents were separated. [GUARDIAN UNLIMITED]

Young Moms
Firstborn children of women younger than 25 are nearly twice as likely to defy the average life span and live beyond the age of 100. Researchers found that the age of the mother was a strong predictor of longevity of the first child and suggest that younger women have not been exposed to as many viruses and diseases as older women, which in turn makes for a healthier uterine environment. [CHICAGO SUN TIMES]

Soy So Good
Researchers from the National Cancer Institute and the University of Hawaii concluded that people who ate soy products regularly as a child have a 58% lower risk of developing breast cancer. Researchers also found people who eat fish several times a week have a 40% lower risk of colon cancer. More evidence is mounting on the role of diet in cancer and experts believe two thirds of all cancers come from lifestyle factors. [HOUSTON CHRONICLE]

Craving Cranberries
Proven health benefits of the little red berry have fueled marketing campaigns and consumer popularity. US cranberry exports have jumped 70% in the past six years. Cranberries are loaded with antioxidants and have beneficial effects on heart disease and strokes. They are sold fresh, frozen, dried or in juices and research keeps discovering new evidence for their beneficial qualities. [FOX NEWS]
