Clotting Kidney Trasylol (aprotinin) is a serine protease inhibitor used for patients undergoing heart surgery. It is used to control bleeding during operations, but recent a study shows Trasylol increases the risk of heart attack by 48%, heart failure by 109% and stroke by 181%. Bayer manufactures the drug from the lung tissue of cows; it is slightly more effective than other drugs, but two generic drugs are available that cost significantly less and are nearly as good at stopping bleeding without increasing risks. Limb Legislation Recent news revealed hundreds of corpses were mutilated for body parts which were then illegally sold across the United States and Canada. Funeral homes allegedly sold unscreened body parts without the consent of the deceased or their families which were then sold to tissue banks for transplants. There are currently minimal regulations on such practices, but a U.S. Senator is introducing legislation to make tissue transplants as tightly regulated as organ transplants. [NEWSDAY]

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, BeetlejuiceTwo specific red colorings in everything from cosmetics to ice cream are actually extracted from the ground bodies of an insect. Cochineal extract can be found in fruit drinks, candy and yogurt while carmine is an ingredient in strawberry milk, fake crab and lobster, fruit cocktail cherries, port wine cheese as well as red liqueurs and ice cream. Carmine is also used in lipstick, makeup base, eye shadow, eyeliner, nail polishes and baby products. The FDA has received 35 reports of hypersensitivity to the colorings and has proposed a requirement to list cochineal extract and carmine on products and foods. [ CNN NEWS]
Pill Pounds Oral contraceptives and other forms of hormonal birth control do not cause significant weight gain. Researchers found no evidence of a causal relationship between taking birth control pills and weight gain in women. Women's fear of gaining weight on the pill is one of the most common reasons why they choose other less effective methods of birth control. [CBS NEWS]
Leftover Eggs Women are born with all the eggs they will produce during their lifetime. A new at-home egg-counting test measures hormone levels to assess reproductive urgency. The Plan Ahead test is now available for approximately $220 and allows women to make more informed decisions regarding the timing of pregnancy. [BLOOMBERG]
Surviving Stress During times of stress, such as a natural disaster, women's bodies may naturally dispose of weak male embryos and fetuses. Researchers reviewed data over a 150 year time period and concluded organically aborting boys may be a way to maximize the odds of survival for one's bloodline. Such conclusions support Darwin's survival of the fittest theory. [BBC NEWS]
Pain in the Dad Post-operative pain suffered by mothers who undergo Caesarean sections may be enhanced by anxious fathers. Maternal fear caused by any number of psychological factors during delivery increases pain afterwards and possibly leads to a lengthened recovery. Long-term recovery can interfere with breast feeding as well as parent-child bonding. [UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL]
Ozone Inhalers A U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisory panel recommended some over-the-counter asthma inhalers should be removed from the market because they contain a propellant that can harm the ozone layer. Chlorofluorocarbon propels asthma medicine into the lungs of patients, but can cause harm to the Earth's protective ozone layer. [NEW YORK TIMES]
Long Term CO2 Cautions Carbon monoxide (CO2) is a colorless, odorless gas that can cause severe poisoning with just one intense exposure. Every year, more than 40,000 U.S citizens are treated in emergency rooms for accidental CO2 poisoning. Nearly 40% of patients had heart damage and 25% of those patients died within seven years of exposure. [REUTERS]
Healthy Eating People can reduce the risk of having a potentially fatal stroke by 26% by eating at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. Eight studies combined the data of 257,500 people from Europe, Japan and the United States.
