My Mother and I - May 12, 2007
Growing up, my relationship with my mother was not as close as I would have liked. During those years I lived under my parent's roof, I didn't understand why our relationship was less than ideal, but once I became a mother myself, specifically a mother of teens, I began to see just how challenging motherhood can be.
While my own children are now adults, and have both flown the nest, I look back and wonder how I survived the 2 AM feedings, having little ones that were only 13 months apart, and recalling the time my husband and I were out to dinner, and our daughter decided to have a huge accident on my white pants, the odor forcing us to prematurely end our meal while customers around us requested different tables!
Or what about the time I walked in our children's bedroom, only to find crayon scrawling all over their wall, and the day our son decided it would be neat to flush one of his toys down the toilet, necessitating a sudden call to the plumber?
Years passed, and before you know it, both kids hit the hormonal teens, and suddenly I was thrown back to the period my own mother and I had friction in our relationship.
There is an old saying that goes something like, "You don't know what another person goes through until you have walked in their shoes." It was only when I was thrust in similar situation as my mother that I began to see, and appreciate.
Today, I am happy to report that my mother and I have a warm and close relationship. We still have our differences, but there is a certain respect and understanding of each other that, I guess, just needed time to develop.
In similar manner, our faith in God, and walk with Christ, also needs time to develop and mature. Just as we need to give ourselves and each-other a chance to grow and improve, so too must we do our part to nurture our faith because with God, all things are possible!
Happy Mother's Day!
