| Proverbs 3:1-6 KJV 1My sons, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: 2For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee. 3Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: 4So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man. 5Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6In all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy paths. Trust --- what is it about us humans that we have such a difficult time trusting God for what He is doing in our life? Is it because we fail to see that the years we spend here on this earth are but a vapor, here one minute and gone the next. James 4:14 KJV whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. This life is but our training ground for the eternal life we will spend with our Creator in an incredible home He has made for us. We will never want for anything, never know sorrow or pain and our hearts will know only joy and love forever. But even knowing these things, we try with all our might and strength to control every second of our life. We agonize over what tomorrow and the next day will bring and try to orchestrate every situation to our benefit.
King Solomon had been given the wisdom to know the path to God's favor but failed to stay on it in his old age. When he wrote God's words for us in Proverbs he shared the wisdom we need to know; now it's up to us to stay on the right path. When we know and keep God's commandments in our hearts it doesn't mean we won't continue to sin because as long as we remain in these carnal bodies we will continue to sin. What it does mean is that when we sin we will feel the conviction in our hearts and confess asking God for His mercy and the strength to overcome our sin. God promises length of days with a long life and peace if we will follow His ways. He will also show His favor and wisdom in the sight of man if we will but trust in Him with all our heart and lean not upon our own understanding. The problem is our sin nature makes us believe we can do a better job of running our lives than God. We don't want the trials that God gives us to help strengthen us, we don't want to do things God's way because for the committed Christian that means sacrifice, letting God handle the situations and crisis that come into our lives. Men are fixers and find it oh so difficult to turn everything over to the Lord. We enjoy and gain great satisfaction in fixing things even though we generally end up making things worse, generally speaking. Women are worriers and although I am not saying this critically, it's just part of their make-up, they tend to enjoy worrying. God wants us to realize that it is only He who can fix what is wrong, in the way that will work out for our best. It is He who knows what tomorrow will bring and has already orchestrated everything to put us exactly where we need to be. Because of our sin nature we more often than not don't want the trials and temptations that God allows in our lives to strengthen us, mature us and mold us into the useful tools we need to become, so He can use us to bless and show Himself to those He is calling to become His children and save from the day of His wrath. Yes, He has told us there will be a day when the wrath of God will be poured out on those who refuse to repent and those who willingly reject His mercy and forgiveness which can be found through the blood of His Son who gave His life to pay for our sin. As I sit here writing this the old hymn "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" keeps coming to my mind --- "Oh what needless pain we bear, all because we will not carry everything to God in prayer." What needless pain are you bearing? Trust in the Lord! Let Him direct your path today and all the days to come.
