Larry Nelson was leading the 1981 PGA Championship going into the final round on Sunday. Because his tee time wasn't until 1:30 p.m., he could attend church, but he was distracted from the service. With a clear opportunity before him to win a major championship, he kept thinking about what it would mean for his career to win this major. He wanted to add another trophy to his case. That morning, though, he learned a very important lesson for finishing the course. The final hymn, the "Old Rugged Cross," got Larry's full attention. When he heard the words 'til my trophies at last I lay down," they spoke to his spirit. Larry realized no other trophy could mean more than the one Jesus had already earned for him on the cross. Larry also realized that when he dies, he will lay down all his golf trophies and cling to the old ragged cross that Christ endured. The pressure was lifted. He understood that nothing he could win or earn would surpass the glory of what Christ had already done for him.
