The young biker was into whiskey binges and drugs.
The thought of knowing his second child was going to be born with a birth defect deeply troubled his soul; more heavily than the semi-automatic he carried in his leather jacket. He also carried a .44 revolver in his belt for back up. He also kept a .357 magnum in the trunk of the family car, along with an illegal sawed-off, hand-held, twelve-gauge shotgun behind his truck seat. Another rifle, shotgun, and other loaded black powder handguns were at his house in various places, usually near the entrances of his home.
It was his intention not to go quietly. His mind was constantly geared on death, simply because he was depressed and really believed his life did not amount to anything, nor was it going to, he thought.
One night he stumbled off his Harley, into a biker bar past city limits, after just having a gunfight outside a downtown bar. It wasn't much of a fight. The other guy went for his gun, but before he could pull it, the young biker had cleared his belt of the .44 and the other guy ran.
His future indeed looked bleak. It was his twelveth stand off in three years involving gun play. Perhaps it was the .44's twelve inch barrow that scared off the other guy, but today the biker now knows it was the Lord Jesus who kept him from killing or being killed. The unlucky number thirteen kept coming to mind: "The next gun fight might be your last", he thought.
The biker bar was rowdy as he waited on a drink and for the band to play. He checked the jukebox, scanning the song titles for ZZ Top.
As he stood in his leather coat and beaver hat he noticed something strange about the titles of each song. Starting from the left, reading down, the young biker noticed a pattern. It was as if he was reading his life in the order the songs were displayed!
He continued to read each row as envisions of past major life events began to happen in his mind's sight. All the past major life events were in perfect time sequence according to the titles!
He stopped short! He had not been drunk from the other bar. He hadn't even received the whiskey he had just ordered, and he questioned to himself, "I know I'm not stoned!"
He had read half way through the list. He covered the titles with his hand. He began to sense God's Spirit upon him. It rushed to his head until he felt flushed all over!
"Lord, Why? Why me? What have I ever done that is deserving of you? Why won't you JUST LEAVE ME ALONE", he whispered, yet with anger and contempt.
He paid the waitress for the drink ordered and downed it instantly, ordering another. He kept his back turned to the jukebox. Waiting. Waiting for another shot of liquid delusion. Soon he downed a second whiskey.
The bourbon and the noise of the bar drowned his thoughts for a moment.
The crowd was expecting the young biker to belt out some blues on his juice harps, with the band, but he felt more like jamming someone's head with a hammer fist.
He became very aggravated at his surroundings; from the loud mouths and wannabes he heard and saw. He started to leave but as he stood in the doorway he knew he had to read to that final song! Facing the jukebox, he forced himself to read the next title!
It read, "Why Me Lord?"
The title sequences were now in the present!
The awesome reality hit him that his future may be displayed! God was dealing with him, strangely, through a futuristic jukebox! He realized at that moment he was only running from the walk; the walk with God, that God wanted him to run!
He was a backslid, gun-fighting preacher. But however hard he tried to deny it in his crazy life, the calling only got stronger.
The courage finally came over him to face the fears of his troubled life and he read all the song titles to the end.
They all were LOVE SONGS, except for the last one!
The young biker was encouraged to step up higher with God and he made his first step that night by leaving the bar.
What was the last song 'I' read?
The last song title was: "Stair Way To Heaven".
Yes, I was that young biker... and this story is true.
