Sorry to be slow in doing this but I've not been feeling well. I
get these lymphoma episodes but this has gone on for several
days.
God called me to serve Him in Africa as a missionary nurse. 1945
I went into nurses training and following that I took 3 years
been of missionary training. This all prepared me for my service
in Africa.
In May 1952, I served in Ghana, West Africa for 6 years. During
that time we built a mission hospital. As I had specialized In
Operating Room technique, I enjoyed planning and training staff
there.
After serving in Ghana, God called me to Nigeria where there was
a need for someone to run an operating room and train student
nurses in a larger mission hospital. I enjoyed so much all of
this work but we were usually short of staff and I would get
quite exhausted. I wanted to have more contact with the local
people not just when they came to the OR. However busyness kept
me from this. We did have some very fine African chaplains who
had a great outreach to the patients and staff. A number of
patients turned to the Lord there and went home to their
villages to start little churches which the chaplains would try
to visit and help them.
After spending 8 years there, I felt that it was time for me to
go into village ministry. The need was very great in the Ivory
Coast in the northern part where most of the people are muslims.
My coworker and I began by trying to learn the local language
(after having to learn French). I saw the people needed medical
help and this was begun in our mud hut first then continued on
in the house we had built. We gained the confidence of the
people and had many good opportunities of sharing the Gospel and
showing love to them. In time we were able to start a small
church and eventually an African pastor came to help.
I retired from Africa in May 1995 after 43 years. I thank the
Lord that I had this great privilege of being a missionary. I
now live in Denver, CO where I have contact with international
young people.
