Have you noticed on clear nights that although most stars twinkle there are a few which do not? These are actually planets like Jupiter, Mars, and Venus, whose light is brighter and more steady than the stars because they are closer to us and the light of the sun which they reflect can more easily penetrate Earth's atmosphere.
In a way the appearance of the planets reminds me of the Holy Spirit. His voice is like a pure and steady beam of light which does not vary or waver. I believe He speaks to believers all the time if they will listen. How marvelous that we can behold the mind of God in our hearts when, like the sun, his luster is too great for us to gaze upon.
Now the Bible says, "believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are from God. (I John 4:1)" According to this verse voices we hear may not have a godly origin. If the Lord has not sent them, they can only be coming from one other source, the Enemy.
Oftentimes when I hear people say,"God told me..." I suspect He did not. There is something about the message they relate which does not add up. A lady once shared with me that the Spirit told her a certain married man was to become her husband. She believed it but I did not, because the Bible says, "Thou shalt not commit adultery." Another told me a voice tried to convince her to leap in front of a train and she almost did. That was not from God either because scripture says, "Thou shalt not murder," and suicide is self-murder. But demons would not be in business if people believed they were demons.
Unclean spirits are capable of being very seductive. They may express great love and comfort as they urge us to engage in a self-destructive act. They try to make us believe they are the Holy Spirit, while they fill our ears with lies. So it is vital to be able to discern who's voice it is we hear.
"Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God. (1 John 4:2)" Therefore we can inquire of the spirit which addresses us, "who is Jesus?"
All of us should question what we hear. But at the same time it is very dangerous to ignore God. If we fail to heed His voice we will reap a very bitter harvest. The Lord tries to warn us over and over not to make certain choices. Sometimes He will come right out and say, "No, do not do this." At other times God may send a person into our lives to give us an intended message. Be very careful, though, about people who claim to have a word for you from the Lord. Some believers have a prophetic gift, but others who practice prophecy do not, and may be under the influence of seducing spirits themselves.
Whatever anyone tells you come to the Father for affirmation. Obey Him even when skeptics shake their heads. It is better that they consider you daft than that you should have to utter many prayers for God to clean up the mess into which you have fallen because you have not listened to Him.
"Trust and obey, for there's no other way." And when you pray, pray with your ears open. Do not talk and talk without listening. God has answers for you which you can not afford to miss.
Love, Your brother in Christ,
David
