On the Precipice

Proverbs 12:22 "Lying lips are abomination to the Lord: but they that deal truly are His delight."
Throughout history cultures which flourished have fallen when their leaders have forsaken God. I believe we have reached the precipice, friends. If we continue to follow leaders who turn their backs on the Lord we can expect to be recompensed for our ways.
The current political campaign is, perhaps, the most exciting we have seen in years. But have you ever witnessed so much duplicity, hypocrisy, and outright lying? It is embarrassing! How, for example, can a public figure stand before an audience and directly contradict statements he or she made in the recent past without batting an eye or making reference to the previous statement by way of amendment? Not one, but several candidates for high office have repeatedly done this. Do they take us for fools?
Richard Nixon did not get away with lying to the American public back in 1974. "I am not a crook," he famously said. But he was, and he was forced to resign. Likely the country would have forgiven him had he come right out and confessed his chicanery from the very beginning.
But our society no longer cares. We wink an eye at a liar if we are on his side politically, or he is sufficiently charismatic. Remember when another former president said, "I did not have sex with that woman?" He looked right into the camera and lied. Do you recall the insulting and transparent explanation he gave the country when he was caught in his lie? But when he spoke at the Democratic convention a couple of weeks ago he got a rousing welcome. It's not that people have forgiven him, I think. It's that they don't care. And he gave a truly brilliant speech. The man has a way with words. But the funny thing is, the speech was a complete lie. He pretended to like someone everyone knows he detests.
Friends, when our leaders forsake what is good and right and fall into moral turpitude we immediately are cast into peril. And when the public begins to accept it and shrugs its collective shoulders we risk losing everything. Lying is an abomination to the Lord. Let us not become inured to it. A lie is something not born of God. Anything not of God is of the devil, who is the father of lies.
Love, your brother in Christ,
David
