Investigators have matched Rockefeller's fingerprints to a thumbprint included on immigration records submitted by Gerhartsreiter when he entered the U.S. in 1978 as an exchange student, an anonymous law enforcement source told the Globe.

A 1978 10th-grade report card obtained by the Boston Herald showed Gerhartsreiter as a mediocre student headed for business school.

Instead, it appears he ended up in the U.S., where his German transcript, on file at the Berlin, Conn., high school, portrayed him as a graduate of a three-year business school in Traunstein, near Siegsdorf, according to the Herald.

The transcript lists his birth date as Feb. 21, 1961, in the small Bavarian ski resort.
