Q: With all the fixed stars in the sky, what are the important ones?

It’s not such an easy question to answer!  There’s no dearth of them!

It is critical at the outset to use a manageable number, like twelve or fifteen, and get to know them intimately.  Then you can expand.

            There are two major factors:

One first  is the brightness of  the star in the sky, called  “magnitude.?nbsp; Some stars are bright, some faint.  One would  want to use  stars that are easy to see by the naked eye.

Another factor is closeness to the ecliptic.   Some of these stars are close to the ecliptic, and some very far away.

Q: Can we fully trust a zodiacal position of a heavenly body very far from the ecliptic?  (BTW, this may cause a problem with Pluto’s position, but don’t get me started!

One solution to this is given by Bernadette Brady, in whose book she advocates using stars as they appear on angles during the day of somebody’s birth.

I should also mention that prominent astrologers of the past -- such as William Lilly ?just used zodiacal position, regardless of distance from the ecliptic.

Q: I repeat my question ?which stars are the most important ones?

Here’s what I’ll do ?I’ll list prominent fixed stars and closest zodical positions. If a star is disturbingly far from the ecliptic ?measured by celestial latitude ?I’ll signifiy that with an asterisk.  Next time we’ll talk about the important question of measurement.  That?s next  time

Here are ten stars to start out with. You can also find interpretations for them very easily.

            Algol ?26 Taurus *

            Aldeberan ?9 Gemini

            Rigel ?16 Gemini *

            Sirius ?14 Cancer *

            Regulus ?29 Leo

            Spica ?23 Libra

            Arcturus ?24 Libra *

            Antares ?9 Sagittarius

            Wega ?15 Capricorn *

            Formalhaut ?3 Pisces *

Notes on Regulus:

For example, it's conjunct Moon in George Wallace's chart and conjunct the Midheaven in Jackie Kennedy's.

if Regulus is prominent, expect high-minded ideals and a competitive spirit, which results in success which may not be lasting.

Regulus is conjunct the ecliptic, so that the degree of Regulus rising or culminating in your birthchart corresponds to that star actually being right there.  As we will discover in future segments of this series, that's not often so!

Placed in the heart of the lion of the constellation Leo, Regulus is the best known of the Royal Stars of the Persians.  It also is almost exactly conjunct the ecliptic.

If Regulus is rising, culminating, or conjunct the Sun or another planet within a degree, it may be especially powerful in your chart.  Look to see if you have planets or angles near 29 Leo.

In the development of culture, these Four Royal Stars are quite interesting important.  Around 3000 BCE, they were aligned to the beginnings of the four seasons.  At that time Regulus was at the place of the Sun at the Summer Solstice. Regulus was the Watcher of the North.

Aldebaran, the “Eye of the Bull,?would have been the Watcher of the East, conjunct the Sun at the Spring Equinox ?it was at the “Aries Point.?nbsp; Antares, otherwise called Cor Scorpio or the “Heart of the Scorpion,?would be the Watcher of the West and would be in our Libra.  Fomalhaut, which we’ll discuss next time, was the “Watcher of the South.?/SPAN>

Where are Aldebaran and Antares located in our current zodiac?  Here’s some good news for the beginner with this material ?they are almost exactly opposite one another in the Zodiac.  The 2000 position for Aldebaran is 9 degrees of Gemini and forty-seven minutes, and for Antares it’s 9 degrees of Sagittarius forty-six minutes.  Pretty close!  Because of their opposition in the Zodiac, we tend to think of these two stars together.

Aldebaran and Antares are both the alpha-stars, or the brightest stars, of their respective constellations Taurus and Scorpio.  They are also both five degrees of latitude south of the ecliptic.  Aldebaran is seventeen degrees north declination, and Antares is twenty-six degrees south declination.  The difference is, of course, because Aldebaran is in Taurus, which is north of the celestial equator, and Antares is in Scorpio, south of the celestial equator.

from Lesson 3:

Ptolemy gives Aldebaran the nature of Mars, although there clearly seems to be a large dose of Jupiter present.  Vivian Robson, in his classic Fixed Stars and Constellations in Astrology, says this about  influence:

“It gives honor, intelligence, eloquence, ferocity, a tendency to sedition, a responsible position, public honors and gain of power and wealth through others, but its benefits seldom prove lasting and there is also danger of violence and sickness.?nbsp; Having heard all this, do you want a planet or angle conjunct this star?  Well, maybe.

In her more updated treatment in her Fixed Star book, Bernadette Brady states that the Four Royal Stars all bestow honor and glory and all that but with a major obstacle to overcome.  She looked at basic myths related to Aldebaran and concluded that one could succeed while overcoming challenges to one’s integrity.  Among others, she notes that George Bernard Shaw, Galileo, and Machiavelli all represent different qualities of working with issues of success and integrity.  One may also note, however, that Aldebaran is conjunct Jackie Kennedy’s seventh house Jupiter and Jack Kennedy’s Sun.

Now let’s look at Antares.  Ptolemy gives it the nature of Mars and Jupiter, but, since it is the Heart of the Scorpion, what do you think?

As you are now imagining, Antares is very volatile and Mars-like, associated with rashness, stubbornness, destructiveness, and violence.  The native would be given to extremes, for either good or ill.  Bernadette Brady states that people with Antares prominent may well cause their own undoing ?/STRONG> they may have to conquer themselves first before they can make a contribution to others.

Brady notes Antares prominent in the charts of Nelson Mandela, Agatha Christie, and, a personal favorite, Joan of Arc.

from Lesson 3 (concluded):

How can a fixed star be prominent in a person’s chart?  The clearest possibility is conjunct a planet or angle, and modern authors tend to give an orb of one degree.   This may become tricky when a star is well away from the ecliptic.

The other possibility has to do the co-angles between a star and a planet, known as paranatella.  Paranatella are, by the way, the basis of Astrocartography, and I’ll say much more about them next time.

Next time I’ll introduce using paranatella (or parans) with two stars south of the equator ?the remaining Royal Star Fomalhaut, and the all-important Sirius.  Stay tuned!

Fomalhaut Mouth of the Fish

Fomalhaut is the mouth of the constellation Southern Fish, and it's name is from the Arabic for "fish's mouth."  This is our first star in a nonzodiacal constellation.  The Southern Fish isn't far from the constellation Aquarius, and indeed the fish could be seen drinking the water from the urn of the water-carrier.  In deluge legends, this constellation is a symbol of salvation, as the mouth is drinking the waters of the flood.

Already we're beginning to see that Fomalhaut is not particularly military or governmental in manifestation, is not nearly as macho as the other three Royal Stars.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note: (the comparison to Pluto)....

Fomalhaut is far from the ecliptic, over twenty degrees.  It's even farther from the equator, at thirty degrees south latitude.  Therefore this   is more often in the sky at southern latitudes.  The position of three degrees Pisces is only that place in the zodiac that is the closest, but the star is never near the Zodiac!  (By the way, this is also the situation with Pluto!)

Ptolemy gives Fomalhaut the nature of Mercury and Venus, so here we're dealing more with personal charisma.  Modern authors, citing traditional sources, call it fortunate and powerful quality but sometimes leading to a dissipation of energy.  Alan Oken feels it has a strongly Neptunian quality.

Sirius - Star of Success

As the NCGR Level Two test guide and a million other sources will tell you, Sirius is the star whose rising signaled the flooding of the Nile and the eginning point of the ancient Egyptian yearly calendar.  It was also affiliated with the goddess Isis and had the good fortune of not moving by precession (due to a fluke of the ancient calendar, it is said), for a very long time, unlike the other stars.  It is also most often the brightest star in the sky during much of the year, and all of you should start looking for it in the night sky starting around August of each year.  It's easy to find!

Sirius is in the constellation Canis Major and is also known as the "dog star" and its rising signaled the hottest time of the summer, hence "dog days."

However, its brightness and divine affiliation merits Sirius as a very potent and brilliant star when placed in a person's birthchart.

http://www.astrologyinstitute.com/Fixed_star_lessons/lesson_four.htm

Ptolemy gave it the nature of Mars and Jupiter -- so we're back to military and governmental enterprise.  It's a star of success although it can also be on the extravagant side.  Sirius appears to heighten the beneficial qualities of that planet it is affiliated with.

Bernadette Brady extends this interpretation further: "This very strong star indicates that  you may, by your effort, gain far more than what is expected --  Hence a small action becomes a symbol for the collective, a sense of ritual in daily life."  Importantly, she says the success Sirius brings can "burn you."

Before all of you with planets and angles at 14 Cancer get too excited, remember that Sirius is far from the ecliptic -- it's 40 degrees away from the path of the Sun!  It's only 17 degrees south of the equator, as the zodiac in Cancer is as far north of the equator as it gets.

(If you enjoy numbers and coordinate systems of the sky, compare the declinations and latitude of Fomalhaut and Sirius.  A good time will be had.)

Most astrologers, past and present, use the nearest zodiacal degree to locate a fixed star and place the star in a birthchart at that degree.  That's fine when the star is close to the ecliptic but iffier when it's much further away.

An alternative, much less used but definitely worth considering, is the linking of a star at an angle of a birthchart at the same time as a planet is at the same or another angle.

Those of you familiar with Astrocartography or like systems know this phenomena as "paranatella" - literally "with or alongside stars."
