Here is a good dream analysis for recognizing "puns" or play on words in the dream state:

............Ralph found himself in the house he grew up in.,from the 50s.   His mother (presently 91) was there, although his father was  not (presently dead);

His mother was "spackling" some newer sheet rock walls that had gone up, and Ralph was helping her to fix up or renovate the house.

He saw that she didn't know quite what she was doing, but tried to fix the mistakes as seen.  Until he came to a little stairwell, which had been worked on already by someone else, and it was "so narrow", of a passageway that no one would be able to get through it.
He recognized immediately, that this simply would not work in the long run.,although apparently whoever did this work didn't see this.

..INTERPRETATION:
..........................................................................................
the "stage" for this dream was set just last night when we were talking amongst ourselves about TV and what kind of programming is available these days , especially on the situation comedies, seemingly, everyone is in bed, everyone values sex and money on these programs being seen which we had discussed.

Now that the stage was set, the Dream itself, is saying that as you get older, (as we are, and we discussed this as well), you may need to be more cautious to not end up, like the symbol of his mother, (someone who is a very narrow person, narrow in thinking).....perhaps the TV shows, are only giving a very narrow perspective of life when they present the SAME things over & over?

I think the other "puns" that I've put in blue , then can easily be seen as the message related .  Trying to keep a more broad outlook as you age, isn't easy,  but worthwhile, or you can end up this way (as his mother has at 91)

2nd Dream:

another dream he had last night was working (which in real waking life, he is retired early, and self-imposed isolation from workaday world)
................and in the dream, he was with another guy in a job place where the other man was telling him, about a lawsuit he had won.  The "loser" of the lawsuit was very upset he had lost, and Ralph heard about this from the winner of the lawsuit.

..............Ralph had a very large "Brass" ladder, which he was attempting to bring up a flight of stairs, but realized it was far too long & large to do so, so he sat this brass ladder on the steps instead.
When he came back into the room, the ladder was gone, (stolen).......and it was known that the jealous man (the loser from the lawsuit), was "looking to get even somehow", or revenge, and this is why he stole this valuable ladder.  The police were called, the ladder retrieved, and the police told Ralph WHY this happened.

..INTERPRETATION:..................................................................................................

I think I helped him with this interpretation, to the extent he thought it through and agreed.

The "Brass Ladder", is not something that truly exists in life, as it would be terribly heavy and burdensome  for one, and secondly, it would be far too expensive and of much value, to be taking of a job. (so this is the symbolsm when you think of a brass ladder), the (wrong type of equipment for those reasons)

The other men (the winner & the loser in the lawsuit), is a reminder to Ralph, that these types of goings on in the outer world, the worka day world, including the revenge & the jealousies that people are always getting into, is not a good place to be, (hence, he is semi-retired), very young now, at only 58 we stopped working for others.

This dream is saying that it's a good thing, to not expose yourself to the outer world for these reasons mentioned in the dream.

One may also see "The Police", telling him of the WHY, as the higher self, telling you the why of your life's situation, and if it is better or worse for you, and in this case it was being explained to him,WHY we need to stay out of the everyday interactions with others because of bickering, backbiting, everyday jealousies, and revenge that people exhibit.

(it's also interesting that many of these outer manifestations in the dream above, were discussed by us just yesterday, prior to the dream, as I had much of the same things happen to me (backbiting, jealousy, and revenge), these traits were exhibited by others towards me, just by my "interacting" with the outside world.

I suppose then, the (Police), or (higher self), is telling him, he is better off without all that going on or exposing himself in such a way as I did.
as the end results will be these traits, as the material world, is indeed full of just these same things.,when you "expose" yourself to them.

Note: Whenever you dream of police, or authority type of figure, it is usually a symbol then, of a "higher authority".
