A Theory of The Vertex

Tony Waterfall, astrologer

November 17, 2001

Ever since a group of astrologers in Northern Iran asked me to look into the Vertex, I have found it to have an importance, yet at the same time an intricacy in how it works.

In an astrological chart,

  • The Vertex swings like a pendulum that has the Ascendant as its fixed point.

  • The Vertex only swings through the Western, or right side of the astrological chart.

  • The Vertex rises and falls at the Sun setting part of the astrological chart, the Descendant.

  • The Vertex swings up through the Seventh, Eighth, and Ninth astrological houses.

  • The Vertex crosses the Descendant twice daily, thus opposing the Ascendant on both an upswing and a downswing.

  • The Vertex swings down through the Sixth, Fifth and Fourth astrological houses.

The Vertex is always shown in direct motion as it moves through the Zodiacal signs, but it seems to spend about half of its time reversing its path through the astrological houses. It changes very quickly, passing through all Zodiacal signs in one day but staying within only six astrological houses.

The Vertex moves through astrological houses faster than the Ascendant. It is easy to see the speed of the Vertex relative to the Ascendant in that if they moved at the same speed they would always be in opposition. The Vertex travels (at very rough averaging) about 10 degrees per hour through the Zodiacal signs and at about 3 degrees per hour through the astrological houses.

Sometimes the Vertex has lots of momentum and will swing through all six astrological houses in a day, other times it will only swing through two to four astrological houses in a day. The Vertex will always swing through the Sixth and Seventh astrological houses but may not reach the Fourth or the Ninth astrological houses in a given day.

The swing of the Vertex will hold true in both a Tropical or Sidereal chart. There does not appear to be a Vertex in a Heliocentric chart.

The Vertex is said to be the place of fate, "That which is written and that which cannot be changed". I personally see fate as neutral as to good and bad, but fixed as an outcome that is devoid of free will.

A key to understanding the Vertex is knowing when to use it.

The Vertex is very fast and chart time and location is crucial. If your time is out 10 to 15 minutes the Vertex has changed. An hour out and the Vertex is not the true Vertex but another place in the astrological chart and should not be used to make Vertex conclusions.

The Vertex may prove to be an excellent tool for fine tuning in a rectification chart.

The Vertex is fast like the Moon and faster. It seems to be a wild swinging Yod in many ways. I would think that anyone who had a Natal Yod from the Ascendant would be quite influenced by this Vertex trigger.

The Vertex is in many ways a Node in that it is the touching point of two circles. These two circles are the ecliptic pPlane and the Great Circle (also known as the prime vertical). Where the Great Circle intersects the Ecliptic in the West we find the Vertex.

I see a continuity of flow from Nodes to Moon cycles to Eclipse patterns to the positions of the Yod and interaction of the Moon and its Nodes taking us back to Planet Earth on a local level.

Now add the Vertex.

Since time is so important to the Vertex, using it at the Exactitude for the Full Moon, the New Moon and Eclipse Moon will capture the Vertex at a time and location that is identifiable via our knowledge of the Moon. The Exactitude Partile Moon chart should be a true lock-in to the role the Vertex is playing and how it fits with Moon patterns.

The Vertex is a flash point within the cosmic sphere.
