How can it be that mathematics, being after all a product of human thought which is independent of experience, is so admirably appropriate to the objects of reality?

Is human reason, then, without experience, merely by taking thought, able to fathom the properties of real things.

(Isn't he suggesting here that intuition or other senses like , experience of everyday life and even smelling a rose, walking barefoot in the grass or sand;  is all pertinent to "understanding?".....that reason alone cannot begin to grasp??
How about cutting a tree branch, seeing the sap flow as you get sticky from it when you do?
Is there any benefit to being mentally ill? Or having a deficit in reasoning capability??

I kind of think there is.

One reason why mathematics enjoys special esteem, above all other sciences, is that its laws are absolutely certain and indisputable, while those of other sciences are to some extent debatable and in constant danger of being overthrown by newly discovered facts.

There is not the slightest indication that [nuclear energy] will ever be obtainable. It would mean that the atom would have to be shattered at will.
(prior to Nagasaki and Hiroshima)................

(afterwards)
The release of atomic power has changed everything except our way of thinking ... the solution to this problem lies in the heart of mankind. If only I had known, I should have become a watchmaker. (1945)

Try to "Think" outside the box:

I think that only daring speculation can lead us further and not accumulation of facts.  Albert Einstein quote......

One of the strongest motives that lead men to art and science is escape from everyday life with its painful crudity and hopeless dreariness, from the fetters of one's own ever-shifting desires.

Albert Einstein.....

Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds...
