When you're creating the message insert an emoticon  then click on the emoticon.  You should get a little text-box like structure.

Then check the "Use HTML to create your page" box at the bottom of the message box  .  You should then see some text.  Look for where it says  

"<IMG height=19" - leave a space after the "19" and type in: alt="put your message here".  Then uncheck the "Use HTML to create your page" box at the bottom and continue on with your message.

 

Incidentally, you can change the height number - mine are 15 instead of 19 - but if you do remember to also change the width number   .
