heres a schematic showing a simple way of cascading 4017 counters,you have 9 useable outputs on each counter to play with-the unmarked resistor=10k,the capacitor=1mf on the drawing

 

the first counter has all nine outputs available,subsequent counters if you dont use Q0 for anything give an additional 8 outputs
