Does anybody have any diagrams / construction notes to build a coin sorter. I am trying to build one that uses a 2 digit 7-segment display to output the coin count, counting british coins (1,2,5,10,20 pence coins). 1p and 10p aren't an issue its making the counts for the others. I thought of using 5 different coins slots for the different coins and then triggering the clock input on a 4026 7segment display driver via a microswitch in the coin slot. Also it would be beneficial to be able to switch the display between coin slots, so as to save on the parts used. Any ideas would be gratefully recieved WSMM |

dear whostolemymonky; I whould use a optical dector. Have a LED on one side and a photodiode or a phototransistor aray. The photodiode is always on and when a coin comes through a slot it interups the beam and gives a 1 count. ken08011954 Craig Sellen |

That sounds like a good suggestion, and would make the system solid state, the next issue is that if, for example, a 5 pence piece is put in the slot how could the display be made to show the number 5 and count up in steps of 5, the same would be needed for a 2p piece. thanks for the ideas |

just looked at my original post, I meant a coin counter, so the coins would be put into seperate slots so no need to differentiate between coin types as only one type of coin would be put in at a time. All I want it to do is to count the value of the coins going into the slot, so that the count is automated, the slot could then be place directly over a money bag. |
