Welcome everyone
I have a digital camera with built in flash and no hotshoe or flash contacts to connect another flash to. It is necessary to use external flash when I use a supplementary lens on the front of the camera because it obscures the built in flash.
Does anyone know if a slave flash would work in this situation and has anyone got a good circuit?
Many thanks in anticipation
Sirkituk

I remember seeing a slave flash trigger project for your setup in Everyday Practical Electronics in April 2006, check this website http://www.epemag.wimborne.co.uk/projects2006.html and look at Aprils projects, you may need to contact them via email for a copy of the project details and the PCB is available from there order service. I professional photographer friend of mine had remote flash units triggered by the camera flash so no connection to your camera was neccesary.

Hope this helps

Thanks again whostolemymonkey, I have found the article and it is a big help.
I had not thought about the multiple flash you can get on digital cameras but it is possible to turn mine off and use just the single main flash. So I can adapt the EPE design and leave out all the counting stuff and just use the simple bits. I wasn't sure if a Thyristor would be good for the flash trigger but this has answered that point and also the use of a bridge rectifier to ensure correct polarity is a brilliant idea. I will go ahead now with added confidence.

Hi Ken
My camera doesn't have interchangeable lenses but will take supplementary lenses and the wide angle one blocks off most of the flash hence the need for a slave flash unit.

regards

No worries Ed, always pleased to help. There is always a solution for electronics problems!
I've been an avid reader of EPE now for some years and there is always something to try and some of the circuits may contain useful 'sub-circuits' that can be adopted elsewhere. I now have a few additions to my toolbox thanks to projects found in EPE.
