  • Professor Troiye: Is it a good time for some HTML 101 learning?
  • Mother Siannodell: sure, but you have to give me a short break to refill my coffee cup, and you'll be surprised, but I already know some of it brb again
  • Professor Troiye: Oh, I'm sure you do. You don't play around on the computer as long as you and I have without picking up some of the tricks.
  • Mother Siannodell: *nods* true enough
  • Mother Siannodell: k, I'm ready to learn
  • Mother Siannodell: *gets a notebook ready*
  • Professor Troiye: Well, rather than me to fish for what you don't know. You tell me about some of things you've seen me do that you'd like know how.
  • Mother Siannodell: hmmm...*thinking* well, I guess I would really like to know how and what you know what to put in those boxes for the F/F page, first of all
  • Professor Troiye: Okay, sure.
  • Mother Siannodell: what's the easiest way to use HTML to link a picture instead of a url?
  • Professor Troiye: Got the FF page.
  • Professor Troiye: ACK
  • Professor Troiye: Go to
  • Professor Troiye: Go to the how to page.
  • Mother Siannodell: I already know that you use <> around like, I and B and U for italics, bold and underline
  • Mother Siannodell: k
  • Mother Siannodell: hang on
  • Professor Troiye: Also open the example "HERE" in a new window.
  • Professor Troiye: http://groups.msn.com/ElmshadeVillage/musings.msnw?action=get_message&mview=1&ID_Message=6897&all_topics=1
  • Mother Siannodell: is it just my stupid dial up browser or is all of msn loading REALLY slowly today?
  • Professor Troiye: Must be your side of the world. Things are doing alright out here.
  • Mother Siannodell: ah ok
  • Mother Siannodell: I'm at the how to page
  • Professor Troiye: Did you open the hyperlinked example?
  • Mother Siannodell: I did now
  • Professor Troiye: Alright.
  • Professor Troiye: Example is
  • Professor Troiye: Kur'ai's Friends and Family entry
  • Professor Troiye: In HTML coding.
  • Mother Siannodell: k
  • Mother Siannodell: what is ?
  • Mother Siannodell: I keep seeing that
  • Professor Troiye: This is good.
  • Professor Troiye: A <>+BR is a manual line break.
  • Professor Troiye: In a word document or in a posting window you create one by holding down the shift key and hitting the enter key
  • Professor Troiye: Do you have MS Word?
  • Mother Siannodell: um...I have MS Works 7.0
  • Professor Troiye: Oh, open a posting window.
  • Mother Siannodell: ok, gimme a sec
  • Professor Troiye: This will be easier to teach that way.
  • Mother Siannodell: k
  • Mother Siannodell: ok I have a posting window open
  • Professor Troiye: You see the check box down in the left hand corner?
  • Mother Siannodell: *nods*
  • Professor Troiye: Go ahead and check that.
  • Mother Siannodell: k
  • Mother Siannodell: it automatically put some kind of code in already
  • Professor Troiye: It reveals the HTML coding and should
  • Mother Siannodell: ah ok
  • Professor Troiye: I don't like those, so I usually hit CTRL+A (select all) and delete them.
  • Mother Siannodell: it's ok to delete them?
  • Professor Troiye: Yep
  • Mother Siannodell: k
  • Mother Siannodell: cool
  • Professor Troiye: Go ahead and recheck the box
  • Mother Siannodell: k done
  • Mother Siannodell: now it's rich text again
  • Professor Troiye: Right now hold down the shift key and hit the enter key.
  • Mother Siannodell: uh, ok, I did, but it just moved the cursor down
  • Professor Troiye: Now check the HTML box.
  • Mother Siannodell: ooo
  • Mother Siannodell: okay
  • Mother Siannodell: whoa...
  • Mother Siannodell: um
  • Professor Troiye: You should see
  • Mother Siannodell: shift+ enter = a break?
  • Professor Troiye: yep.
  • Mother Siannodell: <"br"> = break too?
  • Professor Troiye: Check the box again
  • Professor Troiye: At the front of your name type in < BR >
  • Professor Troiye: then hit the check box.
  • Mother Siannodell: um...whatever you just typed after the word "in" is not showing up to me in the IM box
  • Professor Troiye: <"BR"> leave out the quotation marks.
  • Mother Siannodell: at the end of my name?
  • Mother Siannodell: no spaces?
  • Professor Troiye: Yep
  • Professor Troiye: Okay, let's try this.
  • Mother Siannodell: ohhh I see
  • Professor Troiye: Go to the example window
  • Mother Siannodell: it just puts it on the next line
  • Mother Siannodell: k
  • Professor Troiye: highlight and copy (CTRL+C) the bolded part for the class/level/alignment entry.
  • Mother Siannodell: ok
  • Professor Troiye: check the box, delete all the coding
  • Mother Siannodell: k done
  • Professor Troiye: then CRTL+V (paste) the data into the box. Uncheck the box.
  • Mother Siannodell: whoa...it's all there but not the picture
  • Mother Siannodell: there's like...a line after Lawful Good
  • Mother Siannodell: and it changed the font
  • Mother Siannodell: like a dividing line
  • Mother Siannodell: under the text
  • Professor Troiye: No picture huh?
  • Mother Siannodell: let me try it again
  • Mother Siannodell: ooo I got it to work!
  • Professor Troiye: Cool
  • Professor Troiye: You got the picture to show up?
  • Mother Siannodell: yep
  • Professor Troiye: Now, check and uncheck the box.
  • Professor Troiye: Learn what each of the codes does.
  • Mother Siannodell: what is 'TD'+<> and 'TR'+<>?
  • Professor Troiye: Whenever you see a '/' that is the stopping or ending code marker.
  • Mother Siannodell: I know that a / before the letter indicates an end, right
  • Professor Troiye: A 'TD' is a column divider in a table
  • Mother Siannodell: but it has those after and it doesn't show where it began
  • Professor Troiye: A 'TR' is a row divider in a table
  • Mother Siannodell: where the td+<> and tr+<> began
  • Mother Siannodell: ohhh
  • Professor Troiye: Yes, in FF I don't include the ending codes because they're unnecessary.
  • Mother Siannodell: lol, s'ok I think I understand
  • Professor Troiye: And take up unnecessary space in the data field.
  • Mother Siannodell: oh
  • Mother Siannodell: I guess in HTML that is an important consideration, hm?
  • Mother Siannodell: how much space it takes up as a string?
  • Mother Siannodell: what is <+hr color? that's not the font color
  • Professor Troiye: It is because the data fields have a limited amount of information that can be put into each field.
  • Mother Siannodell: OHHhh
  • Professor Troiye: 'HR' creates the divider line you see above the picture.
  • Professor Troiye: By including color=#.... you change the color of the line.
  • Mother Siannodell: OHhhh cool, ok
  • Professor Troiye: Open one of our threads with your character pictures in it.
  • Mother Siannodell: k hold on
  • Mother Siannodell: k done
  • Professor Troiye: Okay, check the box.
  • Professor Troiye: Go to the thread you just opened
  • Professor Troiye: Right click on the picture
  • Professor Troiye: Hit properties.
  • Professor Troiye: You're going to see the address/URL for the picture
  • Professor Troiye: Double click your mouse on it
  • Mother Siannodell: right
  • Professor Troiye: to highlight the address.
  • Professor Troiye: copy it
  • Professor Troiye: go back to the posting window
  • Professor Troiye: Actually post the address here too
  • Mother Siannodell: k hold on
  • Mother Siannodell: I should delete all the stuff in the posting window about Kurai, right?
  • Professor Troiye: nope
  • Mother Siannodell: here's the address for the picture:
  • Mother Siannodell: http://groups.msn.com/isapi/fetch.dll?action=MyPhotos_GetPubPhoto&PhotoID=nGwAAAOEHOljhdyP5!D7M3kVPXOsdd6S0tMH0Vu3CQqke40poqa0zh2WVliX70hq7
  • Professor Troiye: Did you know by holding CTRL + Z it is the equivalent of the UNDO button.
  • Mother Siannodell: no, I didn't know that
  • Professor Troiye: Now
  • Professor Troiye: check the box
  • Mother Siannodell: like the edit option UNDO?
  • Professor Troiye: Yep
  • Professor Troiye: look for "http
  • Mother Siannodell: k check the box, and that addy is in quotes
  • Professor Troiye: Highlight everything between " "
  • Mother Siannodell: k hang on
  • Professor Troiye: and then paste the url
  • Mother Siannodell: http://groups.msn.com/isapi/fetch.dll?action=MyPhotos_GetPubPhoto&PhotoID=nGwAAAOEHOljhdyP5!D7M3kVPXOsdd6S0tMH0Vu3CQqke40poqa0zh2WVliX70hq7
  • Professor Troiye: You put Ehliana's picture url up.
  • Mother Siannodell: um, yes, I did, but I didn't mean for the tongue smiley to show up
  • Professor Troiye: where did it show up?
  • Professor Troiye: In the posting window?
  • Mother Siannodell: argh, no it didn't work in the posting window
  • Professor Troiye: hit the undo
  • Mother Siannodell: that's who I was TRYing to put in there
  • Mother Siannodell: ok, let me try this again
  • Mother Siannodell: starting with a blank posting window
  • Professor Troiye: No
  • Professor Troiye: don't do that
  • Mother Siannodell: do I start on rt or not?
  • Mother Siannodell: um...ok, hold on then
  • Professor Troiye: leave the HTML coding for Kur'ai
  • Mother Siannodell: k
  • Mother Siannodell: ok, I now have them both back to back in the posting window
  • Professor Troiye: Huh?
  • Mother Siannodell: the codes for both of them
  • Professor Troiye:
  • Mother Siannodell: the code for Kurai, then the url for Ehl's picture
  • Professor Troiye: Um, okay.
  • Professor Troiye: You see the url above
  • Mother Siannodell: yes
  • Professor Troiye: Copy and paste over that in the posting window
  • Professor Troiye: then uncheck the box
  • Professor Troiye: You should have Ehliana
  • Mother Siannodell: k hold on
  • Professor Troiye: 's picture come up in place of Kur'ai's
  • Mother Siannodell: no, it didn't work
  • Mother Siannodell: gave me a little box with a red x
  • Mother Siannodell: inside the same border as kurai's was, though
  • Mother Siannodell: so I'm sure it would work
  • Professor Troiye: Likely what happened is
  • Professor Troiye: When you paste the url make sure the " " are at each end.
  • Mother Siannodell: *nods* okay
  • Mother Siannodell: as long as the picture's url is in between those quotes, then it should show up, right?
  • Professor Troiye: yes
  • Mother Siannodell: k let me try again then
  • Mother Siannodell: yay! I got it to work just by using the url addy for her picture from the thread
  • Mother Siannodell: (y) cool
  • Professor Troiye: Yep
  • Professor Troiye: You can do that for any picture just by substituting the url in place of an existing picture.
  • Professor Troiye: Also did you see the 'border=6' at the end...
  • Mother Siannodell: *nods* yeah, I did
  • Mother Siannodell: brb
  • Professor Troiye: that's what creates border around your pictures.
  • Mother Siannodell: ok, but there aren't any quotes around it
  • Professor Troiye: around what?
  • Mother Siannodell: around border
  • Mother Siannodell: er...border=6
  • Professor Troiye: you don't have to so long as its inside < >
  • Mother Siannodell: ohhhh...
  • Mother Siannodell: which actually starts before the IMG src= right?
  • Professor Troiye: yes
  • Mother Siannodell: yay
  • Mother Siannodell: I think I am starting to get the hang of it
  • Mother Siannodell: sorta
  • Professor Troiye: As you can see I also used the DIV align=center\
  • Mother Siannodell: ty for being patient with me
  • Professor Troiye: to center the picture.
  • Mother Siannodell: yes, what is that?
  • Mother Siannodell: justification?
  • Professor Troiye: yep
  • Mother Siannodell: div = justification?
  • Professor Troiye: no
  • Professor Troiye: by putting "align=" in with < > DIV or P or TD you control justification. You can also put it inside the picture < > .
  • Mother Siannodell: huh? put it inside the picture?
  • Professor Troiye: yes, if you put "align=" in front of the border for example and took out the DIV align= you change justification of the picture.
  • Mother Siannodell: ohhhh ok, I see
  • Mother Siannodell: cool
  • Mother Siannodell: ok, I need to break away from the computer for a little while, if that's ok with you?
  • Professor Troiye: Sure.
  • Professor Troiye: I'll post this under the HTML coding thread so they can read all the neat secrets you've learned.
  • Mother Siannodell: thanks, D
  • Professor Troiye: Okay, that concludes the class for the day.
  • Mother Siannodell: lol
  • Professor Troiye: Class dismissed
  • Mother Siannodell: YAYYYY! Summer vacation!
  • Professor Troiye: Remember practice your copy and paste, your picture URL copying and changing, and Justification.
  • Mother Siannodell: *nods* I will, and I will test them under the HTML thread
  • Professor Troiye: There will be a quiz tomorrow morning first thing for class.
  • Mother Siannodell: *laughs*
  • Mother Siannodell: well, if I catch ya after my classes tomorrow, I'll be sure to show what I know
  • Professor Troiye: Alrighty Teacher's Pet...
  • Professor Troiye: Get going
  • Mother Siannodell: k, will do
  • Professor Troiye: I'll talk to you later. You have a good day
  • Mother Siannodell: take care and stay cool, D
