Time:  Twilight [19th of Summertide (181th day of the year), 1 week after the Red Dragon attack and Weremacht parley];

~ ~ ~ As the sun fades behind the western horizon, a tall man, wearing a brown fedora and black half cape, slowly walks through the twilight down the road from the market square.  Gideon firmly holds the silver wolf's head handle of a cane in his right hand, and favoring his right leg, limps his way toward the blasted rubble of Elmshade's temple.  A large black crow perched upon a chunk of the temple watches the human.  Upon arriving at what remains of the temple, the Master Barber calls out to the deepening darkness "Hello!  Hello!  I would speak with the High Priestess!" ~ ~ ~

Siannodell had finished evening vespers and was kneeling peacefully in front of the Sanctuary altar when a smooth, cultured voice rang out inside the ruined main room of the Temple. Sia had heard of the man, but had never met him in person. The High Priestess hadn't had time to visit with the barber, although he was rumored to be a veritable fount of kindness and information. His shop was said to have some rather unusual, interesting items. Mielikki's Chosen put on her most cordial smile and got to her feet, turning to face the man in black.

Sia clasped her hands primly in front of her white robes and nodded at him. "Ah, Master Gideon. How nice to finally meet you at last. Have you come to ask Mielikki's blessings? Or maybe make a small donation to the cause?" She motioned with one hand to the state of affairs of the building. "As you can see, it'll probably take quite a bit of gold and favors called in, in order to restore the Temple to its previous glory." As she waited for his response, she studied him with her good eye and also took note of the large crow watching her from a distance.

~ ~ ~ Shifing his cane forward a step, the Master Barber, clearly favoring his right leg, slowly eases foward into the lamp light from the temple interior, and with practiced grace, sweeps the brown fedora from off his head as he crosses the threshhold.  The tall gaunt man of middle years, late 30s early 40s, places both hands upon the cane's Silver Wolf's handle, and carefully executes a shallow bow to Siannodell.  The Mocking Man hadn't planned on bowing the Forest Priestess, but did so to cover his surprise at her appearance.  His information about the High Priestess led him to believe she was of greater age even than himself.  Yet, the woman before him had to be only a few years younger than himself.  Straightening from his bow, the Loremaster puts on his most charming smile, amused at the irony of her statement, and responds in his melodic English accent, saying "Indeed Siannoddell, it is an honor to make your acquaintance as well. And you see clearly through to the truth of the matter for why I am here calling upon you this eve."  The former Guild Master gingerly walks, supporting a portion of his weight on the cane, over to a fallen section of the temple's walls, and slowly eases himself down to the stone, taking the weight off his right leg.  Issuing a soft sigh of relief, Gideon casually regards the one-eyed holy woman for several heartbeats, before he gently chides her, saying "Forsooth Great Priestess, I don't often do charity work.  But as you put it, in a way, I am here to make a donation.  Perhaps even help answer a prayer or two." and leaves the baited hook dangling for her response. ~ ~ ~

Siannodell shook her head softly and returned the barber's charming smile with one of genuine warmth. She moved and sat opposite him on one of the few wooden pews which was still intact. "No need to bow to me, Master Gideon, although your respect in this holy place is appreciated." The priestess had not missed the way that the man seemed to favor his right leg and watched him with a practiced but empathetic gaze.

Upon hearing his remarks, a slim eyebrow quirked upwards. She found herself intrigued. "Hmmm...my prayers are usually answered quite sufficiently by the Goddess, but I'm interested in hearing more. Would you like me to tend to your leg since you're here?"

~ ~ ~ With a sardonic grin, the middle aged Barber quipped good naturedly "I'll have to remember to charge extra in the future for helping the Goddess with Her prayer answering."  Gideon quirked at Siannoddell's offer.  He'd seen many a healer over the years since he'd been deposed as the Master of the Thieves Guild in Baldur's Gate.  The Mocking Man almost didn't survive the change of managment.  For sure the poisoned blade claimed his right leg.  The Loremaster laid aside his silver handled cane, and proceeded to show the High Priestess what she'd be tending. ~ ~ ~

~ ~ ~ Undoing the buckle of his belt, the Master Barber pulled down his trousers to the knees, exposing his undergarments, but also revealing there was no leg to tend from mid-thigh down.  Leather straps and bronze buckles held the artificial leg in place.  The artificial leg itself was made of a light polished wood, likely balsa, trimmed with light silver-blue metal, probably mithril, probably created by Dwarves.  Gideon looked up from exposing the source of his limp, and with a smirk, says "Don't get any funny ideas." ~ ~ ~

Siannodell chuckled at Gideon's remark about helping the Goddess. For all she knew, Mielikki had sent the barber for just such a purpose, and the priestess found herself liking the man's amiability. She nodded. "The temple's coffers aren't that deep,  especially right now, but maybe we could find a way to compensate you, even so," She smiled at him.

Sia's eyes got rounder and she discreetly glanced away as the Mocking Man undid his belt and trousers. She began to clear her throat and let him know in no uncertain terms that she could have examined his leg well enough without him removing his pants, but she stayed silent for a few heartbeats longer. Her smile faded when she looked back and saw the extent of the damage that had been done to the barber's leg.  The artificial limb was impressive, and she surmised that it might have been dwarven craftsmanship.

Sia took in a breath and met Gideon's eyes with a thoughtful gaze. "I see," she said. "There isn't much I can do with what you currently have," she said, indicating the false leg, "but have you ever had a priest try to regenerate it for you? As for any funny ideas, I'm sure I don't know what you mean, Master Gideon." Siannodell's lips twitched as she held back her knowing smile (although the eye which was showing held amusement) and waited for the man to continue their reparteé.

~ ~ ~ Having watched her beautiful face, as he revealed the source of his limp, Gideon noted the predictable play of emotions.  His own lips twisting in a suppressed smile, the Mocking Man nodded at the all to familiar answer he'd come to expect from priests.  The former Guild Master realized he'd missed the obvious about Siannoddell.  She wouldn't be wearing an eyepatch, if she could regenerate injuries such as lost limbs or a missing eye.  The middle aged Barber finally grinned broadly as he replied in his culture english-baroque, "Well, good then that must mean all the ideas you did have were naughty!  For shame on you, High Priestess!" and winked at her as he reached down to pull up his trousers. ~ ~ ~

~ ~ ~ While carefully bent over, the Loremaster glanced up at Siannoddell, and casually spoke to her, saying "I've seen many healers, and from past experience, have learned it's best to cut to the chase.  It often helped weed out the charlatans from the true practicioners."  Gideon pulled his trouser up from around his knees, and as he buckled his leather belt back up, explained "But my leg is not why I've come to you this night.  Rather, I bring news."  Leaning back against the partially melted block of temple wall, the Master Barber reclaimed his silver-handled cane, and sedately regarding the High Priestess, informed her "I took the liberty of letting some acquaintances of mine know about the condition of your temple, and they're marching here even now as we speak.  A company of Dwarves from Mirabar should arrive in Elmshade as soon as three weeks from now.  Stonemasons, engineers, smiths, and artisans from the Spine of the World.  You may want to see about filling your temple coffers, if you would hire their services." ~ ~ ~

Siannodell couldn't help but laugh at his teasing. "Just because I'm a priestess doesn't mean I'm made of stone, Master Gideon. We don't all take vows of chastity." Sia didn't add that she, herself, had made a vow to abstain from such activities long ago, as she felt more purified in spirit for the denial of such pleasures, although it didn't mean she never thought about them. "As for your leg, I can understand being to the point about it. I can assure you I'm not a charlatan, and wouldn't have mentioned it if I didn't think I could somehow help."

The priestess was unable to hide her surprise at Gideon's words about the dwarves. Her good eye stared at him for a solid thirty seconds before she spoke. "Indeed, you have my deepest thanks for...informing your acquaintances of our need. However, I'm not sure we have enough coin to pay them. I wouldn't want them to travel all the way here, arrive and then become angry at finding us unable to pay. Angry dwarves aren't something I'd care to deal with. Do you have any idea how much money they're expecting?" Sia's mind was racing with the possibilities of a new and improved temple, and scrambling to come up with ways she might be able to somehow raise the money.

~ ~ ~ His smirk broadens into a grin, when Siannodell mentions the part about chastity vows, and Gideon merrily retorts "And for that, I heartily give thanks each and every day for everyone I met who hadn't!  It's saved my bedroom from being a terribly lonely place upon occasion."  Placing the hook of the cane over his left arm, the Loremaster reached with his right hand into his interior, left, vest pocket, and retrieved his pipe and tabacc pouch.  Some of the High Priestess' thoughts were slightly encouraging for the Mocking Man, especially the allusion that she still wrestled with her lusts.  Filling the bowl of his pipe, the Barber pulled a candle from its holder, and lit up the tabacc, taking a couple of drags on the stem.  Replacing the candle, the gaunt man blew a couple of smoke rings down over it, and shrugged at her question, answering "It all depends on how 'extravagant' and 'grand' your plans are for your Goddess' new church.  I will be employing their services also, so in any event, they'll find the trip worth their while." ~ ~ ~

Sia's eye narrowed slightly as Gideon lit his pipe with one of the temple's candles, but she declined to comment on it. One had to learn which battles to choose to pursue in life, and that one seemed petty to her. So she merely nodded instead, digesting his words and watching his mannerisms.

"I'd like for the new temple to be even grander than it was before, with arching beams and a ceiling or dome which allows both the sunlight and moonlight inside. It would be wonderful if we had elven craftsmen to assist in shaping the wood and stone, so that we did not harm any of Mielikki's children to create Her temple," she answered. The priestess turned in a slow circle, studying the entire area with an artist's eye. She could see the vision in her mind's eye, but had no idea how to translate that dream into solid reality.

"I haven't known enough dwarves to know what would be possible or even how much it would cost, but if the trip here will be profitable for them because of you, as well, then maybe I can somehow come up with enough coin to pay them for the re-building of the temple, too. I have a feeling that Mistress Arienne and Master Raven will be more than happy to help donate to the cause." Sia paused and tapped a long finger against her lower lip in thought.

"It should be possible to use some of the old stone from the original foundation," she remarked, lost in thought for a moment. "There are still some good, usable beams, too." She turned back to the barber and clasped her hands before her. "When the dwarves arrive, will you be sending them here to talk to me? In the meantime, I think I'll pay a visit to the Trinity, and do some praying and meditation about the design which my Goddess wishes for Her new Temple."

~ ~ ~ Quietly toking on his black wood pipe, the glow of the red ember in the bowl would reflect in his pale brown eyes, making them light up with a fiery orange ambience.  The Mocking Man didn't notice nor realize he'd disturbed the tranquility of the High Priestess' domain, and only later would realise he'd been quite rude, forgetting to ask her permission before polluting her space with his pipe smoke.  The Loremaster slightly nodded his head at some of what Siannodell said, but in reality, was merely confirming the responses he'd predicted to come from the Forest Priestess. ~ ~ ~

~ ~ ~ When the Servant of Mielikki of finally completed her initial envisionment of the new temple and verbal plan conceptualization, he softly exhaled smoke through his nostrils, and lowering his pipe, smoothly replied "Siannodell, we are not talking about simple miners.  As I said, Durin Thunderhammer and those with him are some of the very best craftsman, artisans and engineers in gem, metal, and stonework from Mirabar and the Spine of the World.  If you do gain the aid of the Trinity Mages and they are versed in the magecraft for creating walls of stone and material transumation, this would greatly reduce the cost of rebuilding."  The former Guild Master used the Medallion of ESP to get a clearer idea of her plans for the new temple, and glancing toward the High Priestess, explained "The Dwarves will be bringing a vast selection of stone variants from which their resident mages will grow your preferred stone walls for quarrying and shaping as you desire.  You will be paying for their skills and perfectionism, and that will not come cheaply for your grand plans." ~ ~ ~

~ ~ ~ The Master Barber stood up from the stone on which he sat, and replacing his brown fedora once more on his head, conjectured aloud "Without architectural schematics of what you'd like them to construct, I could only estimate what the cost might be.  You may be looking at half a million gold to rebuild your temple."  The Loremaster took hold of his Silver Wolf-Head cane, and nodded at her question about sending the Dwarves to speak with her, saying "That's the plan.  And with that, I shall leave you to your meditations and prayer.  Good night, Siannodell."  Pausing on her doorstep, the Mocking Man suggestively said, over his shoulder as final parting words, "You know, I've heard rumors that a massive army of Undead have entered the ruins.  I wonder where they came from..." and limped off into the darkness of the night, leaving the High Priestess to her thoughts. ~ ~ ~

A faint line creased the smooth brow of Sia's forehead as she thought about what the barber had said. She watched him prepare to leave and commented. "I'll do what I can to raise the necessary coin for the project. I've heard the stories of the undead army which marches close, too. I don't know where they came from, but we'll have to send more people to find out, I guess. Heroes are becoming scarce in Elmshade, Gideon. Between the Weremacht and the other forces marching against us, we'll be lucky to survive the season."

Her face showed anxiety and a wisdom of experience shone in the eye which met his. "Thanks for finally coming to see me. Have a good evening. I'm sure I don't need to tell you to be careful, Gideon. Things lately aren't always what they seem to be." The priestess watched him go and then gathered a few things from the remains of her personal chambers. She draped a heavy wool cloak over her shoulders and let Melanie know where she was going. Siannodell left the temple and headed toward Starsinger Tower through the chilly darkness. Her thoughts led her to wonder if the few allies they had would be enough to thwart the number of foes lining up against them.
